There hasn't been a war movie quite like "Mosul" before.

Netflix's new Arabic-language action drama, produced by the Russo brothers and directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan, tells the story of an Iraqi SWAT team from the city of Mosul, who fight to liberate their city from the grip of ISIS.

French-Tunisian actor Adam Bessa spoke with ET Canada about starring in the film, its importance for Arab representation in Hollywood, and learning a whole new dialect for the role.

Asked about what it was like getting to star in a big action movie, Bessa said it was, "Exciting. Exciting and physically demanding."

He said of prepping for the part, "We did three weeks of boot camp. Super intense all day. We had one break for lunch. And that's all and then we get back to it."

Bessa, who previously appeared in the Russo-produced "Extraction", also talked about what attracted him to the film.

"The story itself, the fact that it's the first time in Hollywood that it's a whole Arabic cast in an Arabic language, which is historic. So to be part of this is amazing," he said.

    'The Deep End'

    Her turn as middle-class mother Margaret Hall in the 2001 American thriller proved to her breakout role. Despite over a decade of heavy lifting in foreign historical dramas, it was “The Deep End” that finally put Swinton on Hollywood’s radar. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. She continued to attract attention on the red carpet, as illustrated here by her arrival at the Cannes 2002 Palmares Awards ceremony.
  • Slide 5 of 12: In 2003, Swinton joined fellow Scott Ewan McGregor in the erotic drama “Young Adam”. Based on the novel, the film is set in Scotland in 1954 and man, oh man, as much as folks liked it in North America, across the pond it was a sensation. BAFTA Scotland named it Best Film and named McGregor as Best Actor in a Scottish Film, Swinton as Best Actress in a Scottish Film, and David Mackenzie (also a Scot) as Best Director. At the British Independent Film Awards, McGregor, Swinton and Mackenzie were nominated, and so was the film. Mackenzie won the award for Best New British Feature at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the London Film Critics' Circle Award for British Newcomer of the Year.     It’s crazy to think of even catching a glimpse of George Clooney, let alone goofing around with him on the red carpet. Clooney probably feels the same way about Swinton, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2007 film “Michael Clayton”, which she starred in alongside Clooney. She reprised the role in 2008 in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”. (And did you notice her cameo as a centaur at the end?)     When you have such a striking visage, why cover it with prosthetics? It’s all in service of the character. Starring as Madame D., Swinton is unrecognizable as an elderly woman in the 2014 Wes Anderson film. She's pictured here alongside Paul Schlase, Tony Revolori and Ralph Fiennes. Just prior to this project, she played the part of David Bowie's wife in the video for "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)", directed by Canadian-Italian film director Floria Sigismondi. She engaged in the absurd again in 2018’s ‘Suspiria’.

Sure, “Dallas Buyers Club” was wonderful, but did you really buy that Ron, the ill, hard-living rodeo rider, would have the perfect teeth of Matthew McConaughey? All this is to say that Swinton’s character in the 2017 action-adventure movie “Okja” wears braces on her teeth. She is marvelous as weirdo CEO Lucy Mirando of the Mirando Corporation.

    As Swinton hits 60 she shows no sign of slowing, and why should she? Earlier this fall, she starred in “The Human Voice”, a 30-minute short film by Pedro Almodóvar. It’s based on the one-act Jean Cocteau play of the same name. The New York Times called the film -- shot in Spain in nine days in July -- the ‘ultimate lockdown film.’ “The Human Voice” premiered at the Venice Film Festival (pictured) to positive reviews, naturally. Some things never change.

The film's commitment to authenticity also required the cast learn how to speak in the specific Arabic dialect found in the city of Mosul, which Bessa compared to a Canadian learning to speak English in a Northern Irish dialect.

Historically , the study shows that Arabic has been undergone different stages of development and progress over the centuries and the advent of Islam marks the real occurrence of Arabic as a standard language through the revelation of the Holy Quran which was revealed in Arabic .

"The accent, some of the words, the attitude. It's far, far from where I'm from," he said. "So it's the same language, I could understand maybe 60 per cent. It was two weeks of dialect coaching, plus on set. I mean, it was all day."

Bessa also laughed that he would often annoy his co-star Suhail Dabbach, who is from Baghdad, with questioned about proper pronunciation.

"I always asked him every day, the poor guy, I mean, I was knocking on his door, 'How do you pronounce this?'" he recalled. "He says, 'It's 2 in the morning, stop it.'"

Another feature of the shoot, was the international nature of the cast and crew.

"We had some English, we had some Romanian, I mean, we had people all over the place," Bessa said. "American, Canadian, we had really people from all over the place. So it was quite International."

For Bessa, it was also important that the film spotlights a heroic Arab characters, which is not always so common in Hollywood films.

"To be able in 2020 as an Arab to be a hero, it's a chance that's extraordinary. It represent millions and billions of people. Sometimes your images so dirtied by people like ISIS, or what we hear in the news, but at the end of the day, it's just a small, small minority that is dirtying all the image," he said.

"So, to tell this story, and to tell the story of this man, based on this article, true story. They fought people and they fought to liberate their city with no Americans, everyone left," he continued. "At the end of the day, it's just a human story. And you just see the fact that we have more in common than differences, you know."
