Former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was arrested on Friday for several hours at the airport de Tegucigalpa, accused of being in possession of undeclared $ 18,000, an amount he claims to have been unwittingly placed in his luggage.

The politician on the left wrote on Twitter that he had been "unfairly detained" as he was about to leave the country for Mexico , where he was to attend a seminar.

"The cause: a bag containing money with 18,000 dollars, which does not belong to me," he said, adding that he had been presented before a prosecutor.

When the authorities scanned the carry-on suitcase, they detected that there was a bag in it with the incriminated money, he told the local press.

TEGUCIGALPA - Former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya said Friday that he had been "unjustly" detained at the Central American nation's Toncontin International Airport as he was getting ready to travel to Mexico for a seminar. "The reason, a bag of money with $ 18 , 000 , which is not mine.

An appeal court in Honduras has dropped all corruption charges against former President Manuel Zelaya , who was ousted and forced into exile in June 2009. The court's decision clears the way for his possible return and could also see Honduras readmitted to the Organization of American States (OAS).

The law obliges passengers to declare and justify to the customs authorities amounts exceeding 10,000 dollars.

If they do not make such a declaration, they are liable to a fine of one third of the unreported money.

Reason to rejoice

Manuel Zelaya was released about six hours later and told reporters the prosecution would investigate who put the money in his backpack.

"I didn't know there was a bag with $ 18,000," he said.

He said he was happy that the money had not been discovered at the airport in the US city of Houston - where a stopover was scheduled - because the problem "would have been worse".

In a security video published by the local press, Mr. Zelaya in a black coat is seen removing an envelope with the money from his backpack, and customs officials asking him to count the bills.
