  Television Nominees Announced For 2021 Canadian Screen Awards, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Leads The Pack With 21 Nominations The nominations have been revealed for the ninth annual Canadian Screen Awards, with the Canadian Academy honouring the best in Canadian film and television. The 2020 ceremony will be presented as a seven-part, genre-based series of presentations to be streamed live on Academy.ca, in addition to the Canadian Academy’s Twitter and YouTube channel. The presentations being on Monday, May 17 and will run through Thursday, May 20.

A total of 37 shows from 18 outlets with take center stage at Deadline’s inaugural Contenders Television Documentary + Unscripted virtual event. The day-long livestreamed celebration kicks off at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 1 as awards season turns its focus to the small screen.

This newest addition to the Deadline Contenders series is packed with some of the best and the most bedazzling in the unscripted and docu genres. To that end, Apple TV+, Apple Original Films, Amazon Studios, BET, CBS Studios, Fox, FX, HBO, HBO Max, Hulu, Lifetime, MTV, MTV Documentary Film, MTV Entertainment Studios, National Geographic, Netflix, Starz, VH1 and YouTube Originals will all be participating.

  ‘City So Real’ Director Steve James Paints Portrait Of Chicago At A Crossroads In Nat Geo Series – Contenders TV Docs + Unscripted The city of Chicago does not lack for challenges — among them, an alarmingly high murder rate, longstanding racial divisions and a fractious relationship between police and minorities. That didn’t stop a record number of candidates from running for mayor in 2019, including, for a time, incumbent Rahm Emanuel. The National Geographic documentary series City So Real, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steve James, explores that pivotal race, which came in the wake of the police shooting of Black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014.

With production shut down last spring because of COVID-19, the networks, which generally produce a number of pilots from which to choose the next season's schedule, instead had none. As a make-shift strategy, the networks renewed most of their existing shows, and put in a few straight-to-series orders.  Of course, making sure production would be safe took months to figure out, and scripted television didn't get back up and running until late in the summer. Ken Jeong, a panelist on The Masked Singer, took on the role of host in Fox’s latest singing competition game show I Can See Your Voice. Jeong, speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event, said he wanted to distinguish Fox’s latest Korean adaptation from The Masked Singer and called it more of an “emotional roller coaster” than his other job, and one that’s designed to help contestants win a “life-changing” sum of money.
