Chasing Gold: The Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony is finally here ... almost. What do we know? The Tokyo Olympics officially begin Friday with the opening ceremony, the details of which still largely remain a mystery.Early birds can watch the event live at 6:55 a.m. ET on NBC, but anyone who doesn't want to wake up with the sun can watch a tape-delayed version at 7:30 p.m. ET.

NBC's broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony drew 16.7 million viewers , the smallest U.S. television audience for the event in the past 33 years, according to preliminary data from Comcast-owned(CMCSA.O) NBCUniversal on Saturday. Audiences for the most recent Emmys and Grammys also hit new lows . NBCUniversal, which paid .65 billion to extend its U.S. broadcast rights for the Olympics through 2032, is framing the games as a "healing" event, despite skepticism from many Japanese citizens about the wisdom of holding even a scaled-down Games during a pandemic.

The primetime ratings for the opening ceremony at the Tokyo Olympics aren’t modeling the Games ’ time-honored motto. They’re not being delivered faster, and they certainly aren’t stronger or higher. NBC said today its overall coverage of the opening night ceremonies from Tokyo drew 17 million viewers for its combined broadcast and streaming, based on preliminary figures. Authorities predict a high probability of above-average temperatures for much of the U.S. over the next several days .

Per overnight numbers, NBC’s Thursday night coverage aired to 10.4 million viewers and earned a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demo. Thursday’s numbers fell below last Friday and last Saturday, which first marked the showings with the  smallest audience and lowest ratings, respectively.
