LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pop star JoJo Siwa will compete as part of the first same-sex pairing on “Dancing With the Stars” for the show’s upcoming 30th season. Olympic gymnastics champion Suni Lee also is joining the cast, the rest of which will be announced on Sept. 8. ABC said Thursday the celebrities will find out which pro dancer they’ll partner with on the season premiere Sept. 20. Siwa, an 18-year-old who has said she identifies as gay and queer, said the same-sex pairing signals to viewers that it’s OK to be your true self. She named Lindsay Arnold, Jenna Johnson and Britt Stewart as among the show’s regular pros she’d like to be paired with.

Siwa’s relationship with Nickelodeon isn’t beyond repair, though. The performer said she thinks she can “of course” work things out with the children’s entertainment company, but that she’s going to do what she wants when she’s performing. “I work for Nickelodeon. It just makes me frustrated that someone is telling me what I can and can’t sing, and these people have been at Nickelodeon for less time than I have. … When I’m on stage, I’m going to sing whatever I want. I’m going to sing what I want. Even if it’s a cappella, I’m going to sing it. I just wish they were as supportive of this movie as I was.”

Siwa’s new comments on the matter come aftershe made on Tuesday (Sept. 14) that claimed Nickelodeon was blocking her from performing the music from The J Team on her upcoming tour. “I go out on tour in January. My movie musical was just released (with 6 new original songs)… Nickelodeon told me today that I’m not allowed to perform/add any of the songs from the film into my show,” she wrote. “These are MY songs, MY voice, MY writing. Does this seem fair???”
“There is no reason that this music should not be included,” Siwa continued, further airing her frustrations with the ViacomCBS-owned company. “Working for a company as a real human being treated as only a brand is fun until it’s not.
