Meryl Streep on sexual misconduct: 'I don't want to hear about the silence of me'

Meryl Streep on sexual misconduct: 'I don't want to hear about the silence of me' Meryl Streep has spoken out again about the allegations against Harvey Weinstein and the growing movement to combat sexual misconduct in Hollywood and beyond. Speaking to The New York Times, Streep recalled how the Weinstein news “underlined my own sense of cluelessness” and how she “really had to think” before she responded, even as people were calling on her to do so. “I found out about this on a Friday and went home deep into my own life,” she told the Times. And then somebody told me that on Morning Joe they were screaming that I haven’t responded yet. I don’t have a Twitter thing or – handle, whatever. And I don’t have Facebook. I really had to think. Because it really underlined my own sense of cluelessness, and also how evil, deeply evil, and duplicitous, a person he was, yet such a champion of really great work.” “You make movies. You think you know everything about everybody. So much gossip. You don’t know anything,” she added. “People are so inscrutable on a certain level. And it’s a shock. Some of my favorite people have been brought down by this, and he’s not one of them.” Streep, who worked with Weinstein on films like August: Osage County and The Iron Lady, released a statement on Oct. 9 — four days after the Times‘ first bombshell story about Weinstein was published — calling the allegations against him “inexcusable” and saying that she did not know about the alleged “inappropriate, coercive acts” he was accused of doing.

Harvey Weinstein was sued on Friday for allegedly using a New York attorney to spy on actress Paz de la Huerta, who has accused the disgraced producer of raping her.

The complaint accuses attorney Michael F. Rubin of seeking to gain information from de la Huerta last fall, while also discouraging her from pursuing criminal charges against Weinstein.

At the time, she was represented by attorney Aaron Filler. Filler’s firm — Tensor Law — filed the lawsuit Friday against Rubin, Weinstein, and the Weinstein Company, alleging that they coordinated in an effort to thwart the prosecution. Filler also blames Rubin for persuading de la Huerta to drop him as her attorney, and contends that Rubin interfered with his contractual relationship and potentially deprived him of $20 million in legal fees.

Filler told Variety that he brought the suit in part to determine why the Manhattan D.A.’s probe of de la Huerta’s rape allegations appears to have stalled.

“Our purpose is to investigate what caused the N.Y. D.A. criminal investigation and criminal prosecution to stall, and to call TWC/HW to account if they used extra-legal means as we believe they did,” Filler said in an email.

The complaint cites the New Yorker’s reporting on extensive measures Weinstein allegedly took to counter his accusers, including allegedly hiring former Mossad agents to collect information from them under false pretenses.

The complaint alleges that Rubin approached de la Huerta last fall, and conducted an extensive interview with her in Spain and attempted to get her psychiatric records. The suit contends that Rubin told her she had no case and tried to persuade her to drop her allegations, which are under consideration by the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The suit also alleges that Rubin called New York prosecutors and urged prosecutors them to indict Weinstein.

Weinstein is identified as an “undisclosed principal” in Rubin’s alleged misconduct, though the complaint does not cite any specific link between Rubin and Weinstein.

The suit alleges that Rubin interfered with potential civil suits that could have netted $60 million (C$74.49M) — of which $20 million (C$24.83M) would have gone as contingency fees to Tensor Law.

Rose McGowan Blasts 'Hollywood Fakery' Of Black-Dress Protest At Golden Globes Actress Rose McGowan said Sunday that it was “Hollywood fakery” for actors to wear black to the Golden Globes as a way to protest sexual misconduct. McGowan, an actress and activist who has accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her, criticized the awards show in an impassioned Twitter exchange with Asia Argento, another alleged Weinstein victim. When Argento pointed out that McGowan had spoken out about Weinstein and inspired others to step forward, the former “Charmed” star wrote in reply: “And not one of those fancy people wearing black to honor our rapes would have lifted a finger had it not been so.

Rubin said the lawsuit was part of Filler’s “continuing campaign of defamation against me and my law firm, and is nothing but an attempt to get publicity for him. I intend to respond forcefully in the courts in both New York and California at the appropriate time.”

Filler said the firm would donate any damages from the suit to de la Huerta and the Time’s Up campaign, in a 50/50 split.

De la Huerta is now represented by attorney Carrie Goldberg, who has also raised concerns that the D.A.’s investigation appears to have stalled.

Harvey Weinstein Can't Afford to Pay Child Support for 'At Least One Year': Report .
Harvey Weinstein has claimed he’s too broke to pay his ex-wife child support, according a newly released court ruling obtained by Page Six. The outlet reports that the disgraced Hollywood producer told his first wife, Eve Chilton, he would not be able to pay child support for two of their daughters — aged 15 and 19 — for “at least one year,” per a Jan. 2 court ruling that was released on Friday. However, the ruling — which was released by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Katz — denied Chilton’s demand that Weinstein pay her $5 million, which she claimed the producer owed her from their 2004 divorce settlement. In the decision, Chilton claimed she was owed the money because there was “‘real and present danger’ [Weinstein] would default on his financial obligations to her.” She went on to claim “she was informed [Weinstein] would not be able to pay his child support for at least one year.” A representative for Weinstein tells PEOPLE that “Harvey has always paid his child support and will continue to honor his obligations. And the court agreed — hence the denial of her request.” Weinstein and Chilton, the producer’s former assistant, divorced in 2004 after seven years of marriage and three children, ages 22, 19 and 15. Their divorce settlement allegedly required Weinstein to pay a total of $60 million in support, of which Chilton claims $5 million is outstanding. Weinstein also has two children — ages 7 and 4 — with Georgina Chapman.
