Remembering John Mahoney, Beyond ‘Frasier’

Remembering John Mahoney, Beyond ‘Frasier’ We all loved Mr. Mahoney as the lovably cranky Martin Crane. But his work beyond “Frasier” was equally versatile and nuanced. His theatrical breakthrough came in 1985, as a mobster in “Orphans” at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company, where he remained a longtime ensemble member. (The Chicago Tribune said his role in the company’s 2008 production of Conor McPherson's “The Seafarer” was perhaps his “most devastating performance.”)In those parts, as well as memorable turns in “Moonstruck,” “Say Anything…,” and “Prelude to a Kiss,” Mr. Mahoney colored his performances with an Everyman charm and a touch of melancholy.

For anyone hoping Seinfeld will go the way of Roseanne, Will & Grace, and Murphy Brown with its own revival, Jerry Seinfeld has two words that are gonna make you freak. “It’s possible,” he told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show.

Just like that, the comedian sent the audience into fits of applause, but let’s get real.

When talking aboutSeinfeld‘s future potential last year with ET, Seinfeld remarked, “Why? Maybe it’s nice that you continue to love it instead of us tampering with something that went pretty well.”

Perhaps Seinfeld changed his tune. Perhaps there is a possibility of the hit sitcom (currently available on Hulu) becoming the latest to join the TV revival bandwagon. (Stranger things have happened.) Just don’t hold your breath.
