Google employees walk out to protest sexism, inequality

Google employees walk out to protest sexism, inequality Hundreds of Google engineers and other workers worldwide are expected to walk off the job Thursday to protest the company's handling of executives accused of sexual misconduct. Walkouts were planned for 11:10 a.m. across different time zones, beginning in Asian countries. Protesters and supporters were posting photos and messages under the hashtag "googlewalkout." It is the latest expression of a backlash against men's exploitation of female subordinates in business, entertainment and politics.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Cole Burston TORONTO - Google Canada's country manager says she shares the same "frustration" as the thousands of employees who staged a global walkout at the tech giant last week to protest its alleged mistreatment of women and mishandling of sexual misconduct.

Sabrina Geremia says she feels the walkout, which included workers in Toronto, Montreal and Waterloo, is a "difficult episode," but that she hopes it will become a "watermark" for the industry.

6,000 postal workers walk off job in Montreal

6,000 postal workers walk off job in Montreal MONTREAL - About 6,000 Canada Post employees in Montreal have walked off the job, along with postal workers in several other cities as ongoing rotating strikes continue across the country. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said the Montreal walkout began at 10:30 p.m. local time Monday, joining several other cities participating in the 24-hour strikes. CUPW says walkouts are being held in five B.C. cities, including Fraser Valley West, Prince George, Squamish and Royal City. Workers are also out in Weyburn, Sask., and seven Ontario communities, including Cobourg, Deep River, Fort Frances, Peterborough and Kapuskasing.

Google staff also walked out of the London, Dublin and New York offices. Google Walkout For Real Change (@GoogleWalkout). Many were too nervous to talk to reporters, while some said they had been told by bosses not to or to refer the media to the company’s PR department.

Google walkout : Workers were leaving their desks Thursday in protest over sexual misconduct at the company. She was told that workers at the Victoria office had a talk about the issues they're raising with management , including a call for a transparency report on sexual harassment.

Speaking at a lunch hosted by the Canadian Club in Toronto, Geremia says Google has taken a much harder line on inappropriate behaviour, especially in the last two years, and that no one is more keen to solve issues around misconduct than its chief executive officer Sundar Pichai.

Pichai has promised to collect feedback from workers after they walked out in the wake of a New York Times story that detailed allegations of sexual misconduct against a handful of Google employees including Android software creator Andy Rubin and Richard DeVaul, a director at Google's X lab.

Employees who participated in the walkout were demanding an end to forced arbitration in harassment and discrimination cases, a commitment to end pay inequity, publicly disclosed sexual harassment transparency reports and a clear policy for reporting sexual misconduct safely and anonymously.

Geremia says the anger of those who walked out highlights that more women and minorities are needed in tech, but that need isn't unique to the sector.

"It sheds a further light on why we need more diverse perspectives," she said. "I hope that good will come out of this."
