The streaming provider Spotify announced a new feature which is intended to give artists more say. What sounds like great news for musicians at first, shouldn't be a free offer.

In recent years, the Swedish streaming provider Spotify has been able to prevail against the competition and become the clear market leader. The selection of different acts on the platform is enormous and titles by unknown artists are often lost in the crowd. Now the company has announced in an official statement that it will bring a new feature onto the market, which, in addition to advantages, could also bring some disadvantages to the artists. Spotify presents the innovations as an unlimited experiment, which should benefit both artists and users. But shortly after the announcement, there was criticism on the network and the accusation is in the room that Spotify only wants to enrich itself in this way. But what does the new feature actually contain and which costs play a role?

Spotify Acquires Megaphone, A Top Podcast Ad And Publishing Platform, For $235M Spotify has extended its run of podcast dealmaking, acquiring the well-established advertising and publishing platform Megaphone. Valued by sources at around $235 million, the deal is the second-largest of 2020 in the expanding realm of podcasting, after the $325 million acquisition of Stitcher by SiriusXM. The Megaphone Targeted Marketplace will make streaming ad insertion available to third-party Megaphone podcast publishers for the first time. Spotify recently introduced the technology on its own platform, enabling a wider range of brand messages to be woven into more relevant podcasts.

Advantages and Disadvantages

According to Spotify, the new feature should give artists more say, that is, they should be able to influence the algorithm in the future for a previously unknown remuneration - so far the theory. In practice, the new pay system will include a lower license rate per stream, which will allow artists to prioritize their songs. To make this possible, the respective label has to agree on a deal with Spotify. The streaming service will then play selected titles via autoplay after listening to a single song, album or playlist. In addition, the tracks should also be played back more often on the respective artist radios in order to increase the presence of the users.

Greater reach for unknown artists

Spotify assures in the official statement that the use of the new feature will be offered completely optionally and that nothing will change besides the remuneration system for the artists and users. Even after a corresponding contract has been concluded between the respective label and Spotify, the titles should only be recommended to listeners to a higher extent. This gives the artist a higher presence, but does not automatically have more streams. The official statement from Spotify states that the new feature specifically aims to support hitherto unknown artists by giving them a higher reach through a low license fee. However, if Spotify charges a flat fee, this would not be easily affordable for most smaller musicians. The first reactions to the announcement of the new feature turned out to be extremely different on the Internet, because while some see an enormous opportunity for unknown acts, others suspect that Spotify was only interested in maximizing profits.
