Household savings in Canada skyrocket during pandemic as Ottawa doles out billions in emergency benefits
OTTAWA — Canadians are hoarding cash at a record level, with households across the country putting more money than ever into savings at a time when Ottawa is doling out tens of billions in emergency aid funding. A new report by CIBC on Tuesday estimates that Canadians are sitting atop $90 billion in excess cash — easily the highest in the country’s history and equal to about four per cent of consumer spending. Canadian businesses, the report said, are hoarding another $80 billion. The savings rate in the second quarter of 2020 surged to 28.2 per cent, up from 3.6 per cent before the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

Households in Cyprus spent €373.4 m, equivalent 1.3% of GDP or 2.5% of their total consumption expenditure on communications in 2018, according to figures published by Eurostat on Tuesday. This is the 16th lowest share in the EU 28 and marginally above the 2.3% averaged in the bloc.
Private households' expenditure on postal and telecommunications services has increased in recent years.

Five years earlier it was 61 euros.
For the largest item, the combined Internet and telephone flat rates, the expense fell by 3 to 24 euros. Citizens spent an average of EUR 20 on mobile phone charges, which is EUR 2 more than in 2014. Citizens also paid more for devices and separate landline and telephone charges. The expenditure for postal services remained constant at 4 euros per month.
The overall increased effort is not due to higher prices. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the prices for this group fell by 5.4 percent in the observed period. In contrast, general consumer prices rose by 5.8 percent in the range.
