'Price-conscious' pot consumers find backyard planting way cheaper For the first time, Canadians can legally grow cannabis in their gardens or outdoor planters this spring in every province except Quebec and Manitoba. Homegrown weed is a money-saver, and not difficult. But there are challenges, including that not every province has a good supply of seeds.

For the last five years, Mr Ievins has been the go-to street artist on South Australia's picturesque Limestone Coast.

On any given day you'll likely find this Port Macdonnell man in one of two places: his studio or the ocean.

With a lifelong passion for art, the 45-year-old turned to non-traditional mediums when he grew tired of easels and paint brushes.

"I always liked art as a kid and through school enjoyed doing art classes ... I got into high school and got a little bit stale with the same techniques," Mr Ievins said.

I'm an artist by trade, so soon after moving in we got to work on converting the wood shed into a studio . Since we have so many wonderful friends who came to help out and we used a lot of leftover scraps and bits in the project, the cost to convert the shed into my art studio was pretty low.

First it was spray paint then waterproof Posca pens designed to be used on all surfaces.

"[You're a] lot more limited to what you can do with the spray paint ... since these pens have come along it's been a lot easier to get paint on a board in a really good design," Mr Ievins said.

His favourite canvas is a surfboard.

"There's so many white boards so it's basically like all these white canvases out there surfing and I just think it's just good to have something unique and a bit different to what everybody else has got," Mr Ievins said.

After hitting the waves with a few of his boards, word quickly spread in the surfing community.

"People wanted me to make stuff for them ... it wasn't intentional," Mr Ievins said.

"[I have painted] probably more than 109 but I started marking the numbers on them [to keep track]."

Can I have wedding shoes with that?

People loved the boards but over time, his clientele became more diverse.

"There's all sorts of stuff that's brought to me that I wouldn't think to paint or you wouldn't paint ... they're jobs I've really enjoyed doing.

"They're definitely pushing the boundaries of what can be done," Mr Ievins said.

Something he didn't expect to be doing was wedding shoes.

"You just wonder about the really expensive ones, hopefully you do them justice," Mr Ievins said.

Then there's the 'Mickonator' denim jacket, based on now-retired pro surfer Mick Fanning as the Terminator, which sold for $650 at a charity in auction in Sydney.

Activism and art unite in 'Fight for the Bight'

After surfing and fishing along the Great Australian Bight for 40 years, Mr Ievins was focused on protecting it from a potential oil spill.

"I like to look for ideas that sort of are a way to get art out and I could see that was one way of getting the message out about Fight for the Bight," Mr Ievins said.

When he was invited to paint a board in front of a 10,000-strong crowd at The Drop Festival in Torquay in April, he gave it a Fight for the Bight theme.

"It definitely worked and got people talking," Mr Ievins.

He has been encouraged by the engagement from Victorian surfers but hoped to garner more interest closer to home.

"If they're really worried about what's going on down there we should be worried here because we're closer to where the issue is going to be and if there's any affect of it we're going to feel it straight away."

Giving regional towns a facelift

Whether it is bringing a bit of colour under water, sprucing up a Mount Gambier street corner or engaging with the youth of small town Tarpeena at the skate park, Mr Ievins is a strong advocate for public art in Australia's country towns.

"I think it's just starting to get a little more accepted, once upon a time it was probably called vandalism if you didn't get permission."

Earlier in the year, a primary school in the area had an internationally-renowned street artist paint a large mural on one of its classrooms.

Ireland's Fin DAC agreed to the project at Allendale East Primary School when the nearby township of Millicent rejected his design for their main street.

Mr Ievins said projects like these did wonders for regional towns.

"Some of the towns aren't well known towns but they get heaps of international artists and local artists in and they basically paint the town over maybe three or four days."

Where Did the Right Whales Go?.
Something happened to the population of North Atlantic right whales in the last decade, as their numbers shrank and fewer calves were born. Scientists had long speculated that a change had occurred in the whales’ sources of food. By 2017, only 411 animals were counted, down from 482 in 2010. A paper published this month in the journal Oceanography, links warming in the Gulf of Maine with the life cycle of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus, a tiny shrimplike creature that forms the foundation of the right whale diet.
