Birthday boy President Donald Trump has likened his wife, first lady Melania Trump, to one of her predecessors, Jackie Kennedy, while explaining why he wanted to ditch the colour scheme for Air Force One chosen by Kennedy.

Trump, who is celebrating his 73rd birthday Friday, did a lengthy interview with his favourite morning show, "Fox and Friends," during which he discussed his plans to repaint the presidential jet a more patriotic red, white and blue.

Opinions | Trump’s big win leaves critics sputtering The elites who hate him will never admit this, but Trump has won again.

This would replace the pale blue and white colours, first applied to the exterior during the Kennedy administration in 1962 (chosen in part by Jackie Kennedy) and now instantly recognisable around the world.

Trump referred to President John F. Kennedy's first lady as "Jackie O," her tabloid nickname after her husband was assassinated in 1963 and she later married (and divorced) Greek shipping millionaire Aristotle Onassis.

(He died in 1975; she died in 1994 and was buried as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis next to her first husband in Arlington Cemetery.)

"I like the concept of red, white and blue,” Trump said. “It’ll look much better, actually. The baby blue doesn’t fit with us...And it was Jackie O. and that’s good, but we have our own Jackie O. today. It’s called Melania. We’ll call it Melania T.”

Trump's critics, who never let an opportunity pass to taunt him on Twitter, once again could not resist. The comparison struck many of them as inept. But the pushback was aimed at both Trumps even though FLOTUS was not the one who made the comparison.

Adam Best, proprietor of the podcast The Left, is a Trump critic who was blocked by Trump on Twitter until a federal judge ordered the president to unblock dozens of such critics.

Best posted two pictures, one of Kennedy "visiting suffering children," and the other of Trump in her infamous "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" jacket she wore while on a humanitarian trip to Texas last year to visit immigrant children separated from their parents at the border.

The caustic remarks about both Trumps did not end there:

"Melania Trump isn't mysterious. Melania Trump is no Jackie. Melania Trump sure as hell is no Michelle. Melania Trump is out of her league. Melania Trump is scared," tweeted Belisa Andréa

"Yes remember when Jackie O questioned the citizenship of Martin Luther King. Oh that's right only Melania did to President Obama. She's is bad as he is," tweeted another user.

"she has been trying to emulate her in dressing. But that’s about where the similarities end. You can never become Jackie, Melania. Except on Halloween," posted @organicElena, a self-described small business owner.

Some users spoke directly to Trump.

"Jackie O was the epitome of grace & beauty. She overcame a plethora of hardships & heartaches, with poise and elegance. She was an incredible First Lady & an even more marvelous woman. She balanced passions + duties, and did so with class.

Don’t EVER compare her to Melania," tweeted @rebvill.

Others quibbled with Trump's use of the word "it" to refer to his wife.

"A) “It” refers to an object, a thing — not a human being. B) Melania is not fit to wipe the dust from the bottom of Jaqueline’s shoes. She could never be & will never be a “new Jackie O,” snarked Mary Margaret Cannon.

One user attacked the Kennedys and the first lady.

"People being offended about this whole Jackie O thing should really look into the whole fallacy of the Kennedy’s and Camelot. One of the greatest farces in American politics. Honestly her and Melania have a lot in common," tweeted Mark Mizzou.

The idea that Melania Trump is a throwback to Jackie Kennedy is not a new trope within the Trump administration, although the first lady herself has never said this.

On the surface, they have little in common. Kennedy was a New York-born American blue-blood who was just 31 when she entered the White House. Trump, 49, was born in Slovenia and is a former fashion model who moved to New York in the 1990s and became Donald Trump's third wife in 2005.

But some first lady historians initially predicted Trump would be a FLOTUS more in line with Kennedy rather than an activist like Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama.

"In terms of the evolution of the first lady, I see (Trump) moving us back to the more traditional role," Jean Wahl Harris, who studies the role of the first lady at the University of Scranton, told USA TODAY in 2016. "A very traditional social hostess is something I think she will be comfortable with."

Her style choices also have been compared to Kennedy's – for instance, her fondness for culottes and cropped pants. Kate Andersen Brower, author of a book about first ladies ("First Women: The Grace and Power of America's Modern First Ladies"), told USA TODAY that Trump is imitating Kennedy's sense of style and her willingness to take fashion risks.

"I think Melania, as a former model, clearly cares a lot about fashion and looks good in anything. She is taking a page from Jackie's book and wearing what she wants to, regardless of whether it's on trend or relatable," Andersen Brower said.

Trump Approves Strikes on Iran, but Then Abruptly Pulls Back WASHINGTON — President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.

The Trump-Kennedy fashion comparisons continue, especially on Fox News and by a Trump-admiring Twitter account, FLOTUS Report, which pointed out their scarf-wearing similarities during the Trumps' visit to Ireland last week.

"Melania Trump is wearing a beige Burberry trench coat, an Hermes scarf, black Christian Louboutin stilettos, and round sunglasses as she departs Ireland today. This looks reminds me of a previous First Lady and fashion icon, Jackie Kennedy," the tweet read.

"Icons only," the account tweeted Thursday, reiterating the comparison.
