A mother gorilla gave birth at the sprawling facility — marking the first in more than 20 years that a baby has been born at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

N’djia, a 25-year-old western lowland gorilla, welcomed her newborn early Saturday morning.

"This historic birth is a step forward for western lowland gorilla conservation,” Denise M. Verret, the zoo’s director and CEO, said in a statement. “For the first time in over two decades, Angelenos will have a unique opportunity to watch a gorilla baby grow up at the L.A. Zoo.”

Western lowland gorillas are classified as a critically endangered species, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Zoo officials noted that both the mother and child, whose gender was not revealed, are doing well. They spent the child’s first day on Earth out of the public eye and inside the zoo’s Campo Gorilla Reserve.

The zoo said it will be up to the mother to decide when they venture out to an area where zoo visitors can see the new baby.
