"The RMAC committee is currently thinking of a coin to commemorate Gandhi," he added.

Born in 1869, Gandhi was a lifelong advocate of non-violence and played a key role in India's independence. Its anniversary, October 2, is celebrated through the international day of non-violence.

Considered the father of the modern Indian nation, he was assassinated by a Hindu extremist on January 30, 1948, just months after the emancipation of the former British colony.

The issue of the homage to Gandhi comes in the context of a general re-examination of the history of colonialism and racism provoked by the turmoil that followed the death last May of a black man, George Floyd, during a controversial arrest by the police in Minneapolis, in the United States.

The RMAC is an independent committee of experts who advocate coin themes and designs to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the UK Minister for the Economy.
