Officials with Elections BC said more than 700,000 votes have been cast by mail-in ballot, which must be tabulated manually due the timing of the Oct. 24 election. The results that would generally be available hours after the polls close, they added, will be postponed for weeks while the votes are counted.

Elections in Egypt are held for the President and a unicameral legislature . The President of Egypt is elected for a four-year term by popular vote. Suffrage is universal and compulsory for every Egyptian citizen over 18.

The ballot is held according to a new electoral law according to which the half of the 568 seats at stake will be allocated to preselected lists, a provision criticized by the opposition which believes it favors supporters of the ruling power.

Former general and head of the army, Abdel Fattah al Sissi replaced in 2013 the democratically elected president Mohammed Morsi, from the Islamist organization of the Muslim Brotherhood. Since then, he has continued to lock in power by suppressing the opposition.
