Whatever was wrong with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New Jersey Devils have often provided the cure.

The Leafs were the better team from the drop of the puck and — despite stubbing their toe with some a sloppy five minutes in the second period — skated off with a 4-2 win in New Jersey on Thursday night.

The Leafs had won both previous meetings by lopsided scores of 6-1 and 7-2. This one was going down that path, with Toronto off to a 3-0 lead in the first period, highlighted by a three-way passing play with Mitch Marner, Morgan Rielly and John Tavares.

Tavares scored twice and added an assist.

But like so much else lately for the Leafs, nothing has come easy and sometimes — with giveaways and soft play — they make things harder on themselves.

Still Toronto pulled off a win they absolutely needed after winning just once in their previous four outings and starting to feel the heat from the Bruins chasing them for second place in the Atlantic Division.

  • For Toronto: Ron Hainsey opened the scoring with a rarely used slap shot. Tavares scored the next two, the 300th and 301st of his career. He became the first player from the 2009 NHL draft to score 300 goals. Only two players have scored more goals since Tavares entered the league in 2009-10: Alex Ovechkin (418) and Steven Stamkos (348).

Said Tavares on scoring his 300th: “It means I’ve been in the league a little while. That’s a good thing. To have success you have to play with good players.”

Maple Leafs’ John Tavares going to all-star game

Maple Leafs’ John Tavares going to all-star game The sense that there is a flaw in the NHL all-star voting process is only going to grow after the announcement of the full squads Wednesday night. Centre John Tavares was the second — and only other Maple Leaf — named to the all-star game, which takes place in San Jose on Jan. 26. Tavares, who leads the Leafs with 26 goals, will join Auston Matthews, who was voted by fans as captain of the Atlantic Division team. All four NHL divisions were awarded captains through the fan vote, while the league’s hockey operations department selected the remainder of the players for each division.

If John Tavares signs with the Leafs , they become the best team in hockey, the owners make a trillion dollars instantly in jersey sales, and increased interest in the team. Multiple Championships are expected, if not guaranteed. If the Leafs do not win the Tavares bidding war, they also come out OK

Mitch Marner scored into the empty net.

  • For New Jersey: Blake Coleman and scored late in the second period, just 23 seconds apart, to turn what had been a letter-perfect Leafs road game into one in which the collars tightened considerably.

“We gave up too many odd-man rushes, and let them get to the net,” Marner told TSN.

  • The Hyman Effect: Zach Hyman returned after missing eight games – coincidentally injured the last time the Leafs visited New Jersey. He was a force to be reckoned with, especially in the first period when the Leafs got off to a 3-0 lead. Though he only got one assist, his forechecking was a factor in all three goals. He was strong along the boards, winning puck battles and getting the puck to his teammates. It was just as Leaf coach Mike Babcock had said prior to the game. “He leads to offensive-zone play, he flat out does. He gets the puck back and you spend time in the zone. He’s a heavy body who plays the game heavy. He’s relentless. The guys who play with him end up spending a lot of time in the offensive zone and we want to spend more time there.”
  • Struggles: The Leafs have really only been as good as their first line lately. The Leafs scoring behind Tavares and Marner has sputtered. That’s part of the reason the lines were shuffled coming in. However: Auston Matthews has only one goal in his past eight games … William Nylander had a much better game, but remained with just one goal since his return to the lineup, a span now of 15 games … Nazem Kadri looks positively snake-bitten, left standing and staring at Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid after he made a sweeping save out of nowhere in the second period. Kadri is now eight games without a goal …Patrick Marleau hasn’t scored in seven games …Kapanen hasn’t scored in six games … Andreas Johnsson has one goal over his last seven games …The power play has now gone five games without goal, 0-for-10.
  • Goaltending: Michael Hutchinson seems to have problems the later the game goes. In his four games as a Leaf, he’s allowed only one goal in the first period, but four in the second and three in the third. He is 2-2-0 as a Leaf.
  • Stats: The Leafs are 8-3-1 against the Devils under Babcock. Tavares has 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) in his past 11 games …It was Nylander’s 200th game in the NHL.
  • Up next: The Boston Bruins come to town Saturday. The Bruins have won two of three against Toronto so far.

Tavares embraces 3-on-3 format during All-Star Game.
John Tavares is set to represent the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time at this year's All-Star festivities and is looking forward to another three-on-three showdown. “The competitiveness amps up a little bit,” Tavares said, who is making his sixth all-star appearance. “You try to score a few goals, make a few nice plays, and try to show that side of the game.” The NHL has struggled to come up with an All-Star format that best engages the fans and players, but with the modern day game trending toward speed and skill, the three-on-three play has become a great way to showcase the NHL's elite.
