NHL names McDavid, Matthews all-star captains NEW YORK - Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid and Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews will be two of the four team captains at the NHL all-star weekend next month in San Jose. McDavid (Pacific Division), Matthews (Atlantic), Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon (Central) and Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin (Metropolitan) won fan votes to earn the captaincies and the first roster spots for the event, Jan. 25-26. Matthews will make his third all-star appearance and first as captain, while McDavid, of Newmarket, Ont., will captain the Pacific Division for the third time in as many appearances.

Connor McDavid tied the game with eight seconds left in regulation and lit the lamp in the shootout to lead the Oilers to a 4-3 win .

Connor McDavid singlehandedly saved the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.

The superstar forward tied the game against the Florida Panthers just before the end of regulation, converting a Leon Draisaitl feed with eight seconds remaining in the third period.

After overtime settled nothing, McDavid took matters into his own hands once again, potting the eventual winner in the shootout by out-waiting Panthers goaltender James Reimer.
