Middleweight UFC champion Robert Whittaker has made his first public statement since being forced out of his UFC 234 title defence against Kelvin Gastelum.

Whittaker required emergency surgery just hours before the Rod Laver Arena card began after doctors discovered the 28-year-old had a collapsed bowel and an intestinal hernia.

Still in hospital on Monday afternoon, Whittaker apologised to his fans and Gastelum for being unable to put on a show.

"I'm sorry for all my friends and family and fans that came out to watch me perform, but unfortunately I couldn't be there.

"I tried my best to try and swing it - I was fighting the doctors the whole way up until they said 'you have to get surgery otherwise you're gonna lose part of your bowel, or it could be potentially fatal.'

"I had to look at my health I'm sorry guys. It is what it is. You can't plan for these things.

"I'm sorry for Gastelum, because he came out here, he prepped and came a long way and I couldn't give him a show. It is what it is."

After falling ill on Saturday night, Whittaker's team called the UFC's doctors, who administered pain killers, but by early Sunday morning he went to hospital.

"They were still trying to give me positive reinforcements until they said 'Rob, you need to go to hospital, you're throwing up all your rehydration.'

"They were honestly looking after me and I can't express how thankful I am to have guys like that around me."

Australia's first UFC champion said he'd have to remain in hospital for a few more days, but promised to be back soon.

"Thanks to all my fans, you guys know what it takes to keep me out of the Octagon," he said.

"So for you guys to be supporting me and sending your love, it means a lot, it really does. It makes it easier for me to get in there and try harder next time and to put on a good show for you guys.

"I also want to say a big thank you to Dana White and the UFC medical team and the UFC because they did everything in their power to make sure I got the tests that I needed and to make sure I had everything done. They spared no expense.

"They made sure I got the tests done, and they found I needed surgery and they got me there straight away. I was under the knife that very same morning.

"I'm gonna be in here for a little bit longer, but I'll be back better than ever. It's not going to keep me down forever, I'll be back better than ever."

Brinkman needed transfusions of O-negative blood, which was in short supply in the region. Public Facebook posts brought out donors, and two family members have matching blood types.
