Report: Blue Jays among teams interested in Romo

Report: Blue Jays among teams interested in Romo The Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams interested in right-handed reliever Sergio Romo, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Romo gained notoriety last season by becoming one of the only pitchers in the last 40 years to start on consecutive days, thanks to the Tampa Bay Rays adopting the 'opener' strategy. He is moving closer to a deal, according to Heyman. The 11-year veteran appeared in 73 games last year, including five starts, and notched 25 saves. He never pitched more than two innings. Romo was remarkably effective in the controversial role, posting a 10 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 over 67 1/3 innings. In 643 career games, Romo owns a 2.86 ERA and 3.01 FIP.

The Toronto Blue Jays offered a contract to free-agent reliever Sergio Romo, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

The Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins are also interested in the 11-year veteran, with both looking at a minor-league deal for Romo, Morosi adds.

It was first reported last week that the Jays were interested in the 35-year-old.

Romo, a one-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion, appeared in 73 games last season with the Tampa Bay Rays. He started five games as an opener and notched 25 saves out of the bullpen with a 4.14 ERA and K/9 rate of 10.

Romo knows Toronto's new manager, Charlie Montoyo, from their time together in the Rays organization over the last two seasons.
