Demotion leaves future in doubt for Blue Jays’ Gurriel

Demotion leaves future in doubt for Blue Jays’ Gurriel It was a little less than two weeks ago, as the Blue Jays prepared for their first road trip of the season, that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a bold proclamation. “I just want to be the best second baseman, basically,” the 25-year-old said, confident that the hard work he has put in over the past couple of years to grasp the position was paying off. But Gurriel was not on the charter when the Jays took off for their second trip of the year, which started Monday night in Minneapolis. He’d committed an error in the third inning of an 8-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

The Toronto Blue Jays will option infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to Triple-A Buffalo following a rough start to his 2019 season, a source told Keegan Matheson of Baseball Toronto.

Gurriel was pulled from Sunday's 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay in the fourth inning shortly after making a throwing error at second base on what should have been a routine play. It marked the second straight game that Gurriel committed an error at second, and he hasn't looked comfortable playing the position all season.

Manager Charlie Montoyo confirmed postgame that he removed Gurriel because of the error.

Blue Jays throw away series finale against Rays and ship Gurriel to Buffalo Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s defensive struggles came to a head as the Blue Jays dropped an 8-4 decision — and the weekend series — to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon. The 25-year-old second baseman started the day running through pre-game fielding drills with coaches Luis Rivera and John Schneider, and finished it on the way to the minors to improve his glovework. Veteran infielder Eric Sogard is expected to join the club from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. “It’s a young kid struggling mentally with his throwing right now,” Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said before the move was announced. “I talked to him. He says, ‘Yeah, I feel it.’ We’ve got to be careful with that.

"He's a young kid struggling mentally," Montoyo said, according to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae. "Yes, that's why we took him out of the game."

In addition to his documented struggles with the glove, Gurriel has gotten off to a slow start at the plate. He's slashing .175/.250/.275 with 12 strikeouts through 13 games.

Toronto plans to call up infielder Eric Sogard from Triple-A ahead of Monday's game in Minnesota, Matheson reports. Sogard, an eight-year MLB veteran, has experience playing second, third, and shortstop and is hitting .267/.395/.433 with a homer, seven walks, and four strikeouts over nine games with the Bisons.

A corresponding move will be made to create a 40-man roster spot for Sogard.
