Former New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault will guide Canada at worlds CALGARY — Alain Vigneault will coach Team Canada at the world men's hockey championship next month in Slovakia. The native of Quebec City was fired as head coach of the New York Rangers last off-season after five years with the team. He previously coached the Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens. Vigneault's assistants will be former Philadelphia Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol, Canadiens associate coach Kirk Muller and Rangers assistant coach Lindy Ruff. Canada opens the world championship May 10 against Finland.

Team USA announced the first 17 players who will represent the country at the upcoming IIHF World Hockey Championship on Thursday.

Jack Eichel, Patrick Kane, Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat highlight the NHL stars named to the team, while up-and-coming talents like Quinn Hughes and Thatcher Demko will get another opportunity to prove themselves on a national stage.

Here’s a list of all 17 players named to the roster so far:

• Alex DeBrincat, forward

USA Hockey will announce additions to its roster as players are confirmed. The IIHF allows each federation to have up to 25 players (22 A total of 13 players have previously played in the IIHF Men's World Championship . The 17 players come from nine different states with Massachusetts (5)

The United States men's national ice hockey team is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with its U18 and U 17 development program in Plymouth, Michigan.

The roster features 11 first-round NHL draft picks and 12 players who have previous experience with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.

“We’re excited about our team and it’s fun to hear the passion our players have when I’ve talked to them about representing our country,” Chris Drury, general manager of the 2019 U.S. Men’s National Team, said on Team USA’s website. “We have one objective and that is to come home with the gold medal.”

The IIHF World Hockey Championship will be held in Kosice and Bratislava, Slovakia, and takes place from May 10 to May 26.
