Edmonton Oilers name Ken Holland as general manager and president of hockey ops EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers have officially named Ken Holland as their new general manager and president of hockey operations. The Oilers introduced Holland at a press conference Tuesday at Rogers Place, confirming earlier media reports that Holland was set to take over the struggling team from interim GM Keith Gretzky. "There's lots of great pieces in place here," Holland said. "I'd like to think we're talking playoffs in '19-20 when you look at some of the young players on this team," he added. Holland's "No. 1 priority" will be finding a new head coach. Holland announced that Ken Hitchcock will not be back behind the Oilers bench next season.

This afternoon, the Bakersfield Condors announced via their Twitter account that the Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Logan Day to a one-year NHL entry - level contract. After finishing up at Endicott, Day signed an AHL deal with the Bakersfield Condors where he played in 10 games

One year entry level deal for Condors’ leading scorer on defence

Everybody loves a good story, and Logan Day has a pretty good one.

A native Floridian, Day is an undrafted free agent from Endicott, a Division-3 school out of Massachusetts. He siged a ATO with the Condors in March of 2018. Fast forward a year, and the right-handed rearguard finished leading the Condors defencemen in scoring with 7-27-34 in 64 games in 2018-19. At age 24, he’s earned an entry level deal with the Oilers.

Angst over Oilers hiring Ken Holland is understandable — but misguided

Angst over Oilers hiring Ken Holland is understandable — but misguided The news that Ken Holland had been lured away from his new cushy advisory role with the Detroit Red Wings and seduced with a treasure chest of cash to take over the Edmonton Oilers immediately was met with vitriol on social media. But a closer look suggests the new GM can get the Oilers out of their current mess.

It’s a one year, two way deal, and Day will get a shot to make the big club this fall.

The Oilers are going to hope that Day contributes at the NHL level for a couple of reasons.

  • Right now, the team is pretty cap-poor. Logan Day’s deal is a two way deal at 750K/70K for one year. Even if he never plays an NHL game in 2019-20, it’s a pretty strong deal for a guy who led Bakersfield defencemen in scoring during 2018-19.
  • Both Alex Petrovic and Kevin Gravel are unrestricted free agents right now, and Petrovic is probably not coming back. Maybe Gravel too.
  • If Day can lock down one of those 23 roster spots, he could make another defenceman expendable. Your mileage may vary as to which one I’m thinking about, but if you’ve been coming here for more than five minutes, you know the one I’m thinking about. It can’t be stressed enough that with an 83 million dollar cap ceiling, the Oilers are looking at under 11 million to fill the roster out. If they can’t unload Milan Lucic this offseason, they’re going to rely on good, cheap players on ELCs and from Bakersfield. Lucky for the Oilers, Day is on his ELC and from Bakersfield.

A good bet by the Oilers. Can it work?
