Biggio's homer sends Blue Jays to 7-3 win over Royals

Biggio's homer sends Blue Jays to 7-3 win over Royals KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bo Bichette rapped a clean single in the first at-bat of his big league career, and then was greeted by his parents after the Toronto Blue Jays rolled to a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night. What did they say? "I don't even remember what my mom said," the mop-haired 21-year-old shortstop said, chuckling with a rookie naiveté. "My dad said, 'Congratulations Bo. You're a big leaguer.'" That would be longtime major leaguer Dante Bichette, by the way. The Blue Jays' top prospect didn't have the biggest impact on the game, though.

TORONTO – Freddy Galvis has been claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds from the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Reds said he is expected to report to the team on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old shortstop was placed on outright waivers over the weekend, giving him a chance to hook up with a contender while allowing the Blue Jays to prioritize Bo Bichette at shortstop, provide Cavan Biggio more reps at second and free up DH at-bats, as well.

The decision comes after the Blue Jays couldn’t find a taker for Galvis ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, and with a logjam in the infield created by Bichette’s subsequent promotion.

In previous years, Galvis would have been a candidate for an August waiver deal but those have been eliminated under the single trade deadline. He’s in the midst of his most productive season in the big-leagues, batting .267/.299/.444 with 18 homers in 115 games with his usual steady defence up the middle.

The Reds assume the remainder of his $4 million salary and the $1 million buyout on a 2020 club option valued at $5.5 million.

Braves claim Hamilton off waivers from Royals.
The Atlanta Braves claimed outfielder Billy Hamilton off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Monday. The Royals designated Hamilton for assignment on Aug. 16 after he hit .211/.275/.269 with 18 stolen bases in 93 games in 2019. Kansas City signed the 28-year-old to a one-year, $5.25-million contract with a mutual option for the 2020 campaign during the offseason. Though he's struggled to get on base with a lifetime OBP of .296, Hamilton amassed 50-plus stolen bases four times in six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. His speed has also helped him become a five-time Gold Glove finalist.
