Market around free agent defenseman Jake Gardiner slow to develop

Market around free agent defenseman Jake Gardiner slow to develop While most of the top players in unrestricted free agency signed quickly, that has not been the case for Jake Gardiner. While he was viewed as arguably the top defenseman available (once Erik Karlsson re-signed with San Jose in June), his market has seemingly been slow to develop. In an appearance on his podcast for TalkNorth (audio link), Michael Russo of The Athletic provided an update on Gardiner’s situation. Beyond his initial asking price, some teams were concerned over the fact that he opted to not have surgery to fix his back issue, instead opting for rest and rehab.

ZURICH — Manchester City has been fined for improperly signing young soccer players but avoided a ban on transfers.

FIFA said Tuesday the fact that the English champion "accepted its responsibility" for breaking transfer rules was a factor in the choice to fine it 370,000 Swiss francs ($380,000).

FIFA says City broke rules on transfers for players aged under 18. FIFA didn’t specify exactly what the club had done wrong and how many players were involved, but City said the breaches involved players who were taken on trial or played in friendly games. No players were named.

Jeff Bezos sells $2 billion of Amazon stock after 4% stake transfer

Jeff Bezos sells $2 billion of Amazon stock after 4% stake transfer (Bloomberg) — MacKenzie Bezos is officially Amazon.com Inc.’s second-largest individual shareholder. About 19.7 million shares are now registered in 49-year-old MacKenzie’s name, according to regulatory filings detailing stock sales by her ex-husband, Jeff Bezos. The transfer is a rare disclosure for a divorce whose financial terms have otherwise been shielded from the public. A King County, Washington, judge had signed an order formalizing the separation on July 5. Bezos sold 968,148 shares for about $1.8 billion between July 29 and July 31 as part of his stock-sale plan, the filings show.

"The Club accepts responsibility for the breaches which arose as a result of misinterpretation of the regulations in question," City said in a statement. "All of the breaches occurred before December 2016 when guidance on the interpretation of the provisions was issued, since which date Manchester City has been fully compliant."

In February, FIFA handed Chelsea a ban on signing players for the next two transfer windows after finding the club had broken the same kind of regulations in relation to 29 different players after 92 cases were investigated.

FIFA rules generally stop clubs from signing foreign players before they turn 18, except in cases where the player’s parents move to the club’s country for non-football reasons.

Chelsea disputed the verdict and the ban was upheld by FIFA on appeal. Chelsea launched another appeal in June to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"The protection of minors is a key element in FIFA’s overall regulatory framework relating to the transfer of players, and the effective enforcement of these rules is paramount, as has also been confirmed on various occasions by the Court of Arbitration for Sport," FIFA said in a statement Tuesday.

This story has been corrected to show that FIFA sanctioned Chelsea in February, not in March.

Report: Canucks extend GM Jim Benning beyond 2019-20 season.
The Vancouver Canucks have inked general manager Jim Benning to a contract extension that will keep him with the club beyond the 2019-20 campaign, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. The 56-year-old executive, who was hired by the team ahead of the 2014-15 season, was heading into the final year of his current contract, according to Friedman. Benning joined the club during a transition period and made his mark after shipping out veteran pieces Ryan Kesler and Kevin Bieksa to the Anaheim Ducks. Benning has added talented young pieces through the draft including Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and Quinn Hughes.
