The Jesse Puljujarvi saga continues. Edmonton Oilers forward Jesse Puljujarvi is going home to Finland, but the door isn’t closed on his NHL career.

The 21-year-old signed a one-year deal with Oulun Kärpät in Finland’s Liiga on Tuesday, but the contract includes a clause that would allow him to return to the NHL before Dec. 1.

Puljujarvi is currently a restricted free agent, but his agent told Sportsnet’s Mark Spector in June that his client will not play another game for the Oilers.

“If he doesn’t get traded,” Markus Lehto told Spector, “he will play in Europe next year. He will not play in Edmonton.”

“At the end of the day, if you can do a deal that makes sense for the Edmonton Oilers, you do it,” Oilers GM Ken Holland told Spector in response to Lehto. “If you can’t, you go over (to Europe) and watch him play, and hopefully he scores a lot of goals over there.”

Puljujarvi, the fourth-overall pick in 2015, played parts of two seasons for Kärpät before joining the Oilers. In 71 games over two seasons there, Puljujarvi scored 17 goals and 39 points. He added nine points in 10 playoff games.

Despite his high draft selection, Puljujarvi has yet to breakout offensively in the NHL. In 139 games over three seasons, he has 17 goals and 37 points. He also has 15 goals and 37 points in 53 AHL games.
