It appears Carmelo Anthony could be on track for an NBA return in New York – the central question is which jersey he’ll be wearing when and if that happens.

According to Frank Isola of The Athletic, newly acquired Brooklyn Nets stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant are “pushing” for their club to sign Melo, who recently worked out with Irving and other Nets players in Los Angeles.

Anthony, who was born in Brooklyn but grew up in Baltimore, also reportedly took part in an informal workout for Nets GM Sean Marks, while the team’s head coach, Kenny Atkinson, has also “watched Anthony play” this summer, per Isola.

Nets announce sale of team, Barclays Center to Tsai

Nets announce sale of team, Barclays Center to Tsai Mikhail Prokhorov has entered into a definitive agreement to sell his 51 percent controlling interest in the Brooklyn Nets and full ownership of the Barclays Center to Joseph Tsai, the team announced on Friday. The deal - which is worth an NBA-record $3.5 billion, according to NetsDaily - is still subject to league Board of Governors approval. Longtime Nets CEO Brett Yormark will depart the organization after the sale is completed. Prokhorov, a Russian businessman, originally paid $200 million in 2009 to become the Nets' principal owner and a key investor in the Barclays Center. The Nets moved to the arena from New Jersey in 2012.

The 10-time all-star’s recent workout with the Nets in L.A. “certainly helped his cause,” a source told Isola, adding: “His body looked great.”

While Brooklyn appears to be Melo’s best bet at returning to the NBA, if a return comes at all, it was also reported that the longtime New York Knick is scheduled to work out with a group of Knicks players in Manhattan on Thursday.

With Durant recovering from a torn Achilles and teammate Wilson Chandler now set to miss 25 games following a suspension for violating the terms of the league’s anti-drug program, Anthony’s services could be of use to the Nets.

Anthony’s last NBA appearance came in November 2018 for the Houston Rockets, after which the team opted to part ways with the star forward. Over the course of his 16-year career in the NBA, Anthony logged parts of eight seasons in Denver before a similar stint with the Knicks. He played out one season Oklahoma City before the brief run with Houston.
