Canadian Denis Shapovalov wins opener at Chengdu Open . CHENGDU , China — Canada 's Denis Shapovalov saved all nine break points he faced en route to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania in a first-round match on Wednesday at the Chengdu Open .

Shapovalov won 85 per cent of points on first serve and notched nine aces against the 98th-ranked Gerasimov.

Shapovalov, 20, has won eight of his past 10 matches after enduring a rocky stretch following a run to the Miami Open semis in March.

Shapovalov will move up to at least 32nd in the world rankings next week. He could move as high as 25th if he wins the tournament.

The Canadian is the lone seeded player remaining in the draw.

Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan faces lucky loser Lloyd Harris of South Africa in the other semifinal.

SHANGHAI — Canadians improved to 4-0 at the Shanghai Masters after wins by Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil on Tuesday. Vancouver's Pospisil won his second match in as many days and just his third match of the season following back surgery as he prevailed 6-3, 7-5 over Portugal's Joao Sousa in the second round. Montreal's Auger-Aliassime was leading qualifier Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 7-6 (5), 4-0 when the latter player retired. Pospisil's win over the 63rd-ranked Sousa currently has him shooting up 59 spots in the rankings after starting the week at No. 248.Pospisil won 31 of 34 points when he got his first serve in, including 15 aces.
