Raptors’ Gasol plays it smart after summer like no other

Raptors’ Gasol plays it smart after summer like no other QUEBEC CITY—Marc Gasol has played in more intense and important basketball games in a compressed five-month period than he has at any time in his 34-plus years on the planet, and as he sat there watching a mundane training camp workout with the Raptors here Sunday he had one thought: “I’d love to be back out there.” But Gasol is nothing if not smart, and he realizes there are those who have decided that it is in his best interest to ease himself into the coming NBA season — and that they should be heeded.“I think you have to trust the medical team,” the Spanish centre said after the NBA champions went through their first training camp workout at the University of Laval.

Bullying is the use of force, coercion, or threat, to abuse, aggressively dominate or intimidate. The behavior is often repeated and habitual.

‘ Load management ’. There was uncertainty about Leonard’s health after the trade. The Raptors lost the first two games of their next series on the road against the Bucks, who had the higher seed. It has been a perfect match: Leonard was a stabilizing influence for an anxious Raptors team reeling from

The Raptors chose to rest their veterans in their only home exhibition game.

It was close to lunacy to schedule the lone Raptors home pre-season game for about 48 hours after the team returned from two games halfway around the world in Japan.

And given the load management times in which we live, it seems the team’s medical staff thought the same thing.

Six of Toronto’s top seven players and its most seasoned veterans — Kyle Lowry, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Fred VanVleet, Norm Powell and Pascal Siakam — sat out what turned into a 105-91 pasting handed out by the Chicago Bulls at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday.

OG Anunoby was the only one of the presumptive top seven to play in the game, going 5-for-9 from the field with a team-high 15 points in 27 minutes.

“We’re not playing a lot of guys tonight because of the timing and the circumstances, and the chance for us to see some guys we haven’t seen,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said before running out a starting lineup of Terence Davis II, Patrick McCaw, Malcolm Miller, Anunoby and Chris Boucher.

What he saw wasn’t all good. A series of unfamiliar and disjointed groups were never in the game, and it’s unlikely anyone made a huge leap up the pecking order.

“I think it’s a little hard to put them in those scenarios,” Nurse said afterward. “I think that one or two of them, mixed in with some of our guys, look a lot better in their role rather than trying to make them primary. And I think the trip is still lingering with us just a little bit, so it was good to get that part of it done.

Doc Rivers: Kawhi 'great' in 1st full-contact practice with Clippers

Doc Rivers: Kawhi 'great' in 1st full-contact practice with Clippers So far, so good for Kawhi Leonard at the Los Angeles Clippers' University of Hawaii-based training camp this week. "Kawhi practiced today," head coach Doc Rivers said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "He was great." It marked the two-time Finals MVP's first full-contact practice with the Clippers. Rivers estimated his new star forward participated in "probably half of the live stuff." Leonard's recent history with injuries and load management has made his every on-court movement a point of discussion for fans and pundits alike. The Toronto Raptors meticulously managed his workload last season to mitigate injury risk.

“Not a ton to take from that game but it gives those guys a chance to get out there, and it was really the only opportunity we were going to have with only four pre-season games.”

Anunoby was one of the few bright spots for Toronto, which fell to 1-2 on the pre-season after splitting two games with Houston in Tokyo.

“I liked OG offensively tonight,” Nurse said. “I thought he made some hard drives, and you mentioned the kick-outs. Four assists is a big number for him, really.”

  • A banged-up guard: Patrick McCaw, being given a shot at rotation role in the backcourt, left after only 20 minutes with a twisted knee.

He got caught up with Chicago’s Otto Porter Jr. before hobbling to the Raptors’ locker room. The team said he will be examined further on Monday.

“I think he’ll be OK but we’ll check on it and see how he is,” Nurse said. “Hopefully he’ll be OK.”

McCaw had a couple of points and a couple of steals before leaving the game. In 26 regular season games for Toronto last season, the 23-year-old averaged 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in about 13 minutes per game.

  • Mississauga-bound: With roster moves still to be made officially, Nick Nurse made it clear that second-round draft pick Dewan Hernandez will be headed to the G League.

“I project him to be maybe a January, February guy,” Nurse said after the six-foot-11 centre played 19 minutes with 11 rebounds on Sunday.

“We’ll get him down to the G League and get a bunch of games under his belt and maybe we move him back and forth a little bit and see if we can get him midway through the season to be able to help us.”
