Pastrnak: Nothing wrong with picking rival Matthews for Hart Trophy

Pastrnak: Nothing wrong with picking rival Matthews for Hart Trophy Just because their teams are rivals, doesn't mean David Pastrnak can't show Auston Matthews some love. "He has an unbelievable shot and skill set and he can find the soft spot," Pastrnak told reporters Tuesday, via TSN. "Every time he's 100% healthy he's showing that, and I just think he's a hell of a player." During the summer, the Boston Bruins winger predicted that the Toronto Maple Leafs star would win the Hart Trophy this season. With an off day to clear his head, Auston Matthews made a point of unplugging his hockey brain. "We're a family here," the 22-year-old said following Thursday's practice. "But sometimes you 've got to yell at Leafs forward Andreas Johnsson was the most recent goat after taking two penalties in a

Auston Matthews called out himself and his Toronto Maple Leafs teammates after Tuesday's loss to the rival Boston Bruins.

"It's just not good enough," he said postgame. "We need to be better and I think it comes from the leadership group. I need to be better. All of us need to be better. We just need to look each other in the eye and hold each other accountable."

The Maple Leafs are 5-4-2 to start the season and have dropped three of their last four games. Matthews shed more light on his comments Thursday.

"We're a family here, but sometimes you gotta yell at your family," he told TSN's Kristen Shilton. "(Communication) is something that we can do a better job of and I think it's something that we are doing a better job of."

Marleau: Maple Leafs ‘going to be great for a long time’

Marleau: Maple Leafs ‘going to be great for a long time’ Considering all the ways Patrick Marleau helped Toronto’s young stars on and off the ice, it’s only fitting that his final act as a Maple Leaf would also play a large role in setting the duo up for success. The post Doughty has personal rivalries on every team, just doesn’t tell media appeared first on Sportsnet.ca.But more than that, the veteran star’s presence in a young locker room turned out to be a success on and off the ice, with Marleau mentoring several young Maple Leafs forwards — most notably, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews.

With an off day to clear his head, Auston Matthews made a point of unplugging his hockey brain. “We're a family here,” the 22-year-old said following Thursday's practice. “But sometimes you 've got to yell at your “ You look at the guys across from you and you 've got to out -will him,” said the coach.

Auston Matthews says Maple Leafs are a very tight knit family , but they have to start holding each other more accountable, meanwhile Mike Babcock wants his leaders to just go out and do the best they can, and others will follow. I understand that I can withdraw my consent at any time .

Sloppy defensive play and undisciplined hockey have held the Leafs back. They're tied for the most goals against in the league entering Thursday and have the fourth-most giveaways. They've also taken the fifth-most penalties - including 10 in the last two games - after being the NHL's most disciplined squad a year ago.

"You don't want to lose; I hate losing," Matthews said. "So you're frustrated, but it's still early. We've still got new guys and we're still trying to mesh. ... But when we look around at the guys that we have, I think we expect more out of each other. So that's just holding one another accountable, putting the past in the past, and putting our best foot forward."

This summer, Toronto experienced as much turnover as any club in the league. Nine players have already made their Leafs debut this season. Two key skaters - Zach Hyman and Travis Dermott - have yet to play after undergoing offseason surgeries, and captain John Tavares has missed last three games with a broken finger.

Matthews calls out Leafs after loss to Bruins: 'All of us need to be better'

Matthews calls out Leafs after loss to Bruins: 'All of us need to be better' Auston Matthews is calling for changes after his Toronto Maple Leafs fell to 5-4-2 on the season following a loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night. "It's just not good enough," Matthews said postgame, per TSN. "We need to be better and I think it comes from the leadership group. I need to be better. All of us need to be better. We just need to look each other in the eye and hold each other accountable." "It's just not good enough," Matthews said postgame, per TSN. "We need to be better and I think it comes from the leadership group. I need to be better. All of us need to be better. We just need to look each other in the eye and hold each other accountable.

“We’re a family here, but sometimes you gotta yell at your family .” “Maybe sometimes it takes a little longer than everyone’s expecting it to just — boom — happen. I mean, there’s other good teams out there, and when you have new faces playing new systems, sometimes there’s miscues.

The use of spanking to discipline children has been in decline for 50 years. But yelling ? Almost everybody still yells at their kids sometimes , even the parents who know it doesn’t work. Yelling may be the most widespread parental stupidity around today.

Matthews, who leads the team with eight goals in 11 games, has been counted on to play bigger minutes with Tavares out. He admits he needs to do a better job without the puck.

"Just defensively (I can be better) and all areas," he said. "I have to put the puck in the back of the net, create on offense, but it starts in the D-zone and I think that's an area that we've been trying to work on lately, especially today (at practice), so I've got to be better."

The Leafs are back in action Friday against the San Jose Sharks and Saturday versus the Montreal Canadiens.
