Report: No contract talks yet between Maple Leafs, Muzzin The Toronto Maple Leafs and defenseman Jake Muzzin have yet to discuss a contract extension, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported on Wednesday's edition of "Insider Trading." "Jake Muzzin, their best defender early this season, there have been no contract talks at all. Not this summer, not early in the season between his camp and the Toronto Maple Leafs," LeBrun said. Muzzin is an impending unrestricted free agent and is eligible to sign an extension at any time. Yet the Leafs are reportedly waiting to see how blue-liners Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci fit before engaging in contract discussions with any of their other defensemen.

Load management is here to stay in Toronto.

The Toronto Raptors announced Tuesday that sports science guru Alex McKechnie — who was credited in keeping superstar Kawhi Leonard healthy as the team captured their first title in franchise history last season — has been promoted to vice-president of player health and performance and signed to a contract extension.

The Raptors popularized the term “load management” in 2018-19 as McKechnie, who oversaw Leonard’s training regimen, frequently rested the two-time NBA Finals MVP, often on back-to-backs, during his recovery from tendinopathy in his quad.

McKechnie, a physiotherapist from Glasgow, Scotland, joined the Raptors in 2011 after spending 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.

That’s a distinction that’s not so distinctive when you consider most of the league is also preparing to make a run at Antetokounmpo as well.
