Canucks' Markstrom granted leave of absence, expected back on weekend

Canucks' Markstrom granted leave of absence, expected back on weekend The Vancouver Canucks have granted netminder Jacob Markstrom a leave of absence to tend to a family matter, general manager Jim Benning announced Monday. Markstrom is expected to rejoin the club on the road this weekend against either the New Jersey Devils or the New York Rangers. The 29-year-old puck-stopper has had a strong start to the campaign, collecting a pair of wins with a 2.23 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage over four starts.Vancouver will lean on backup Thatcher Demko as Markstrom is likely to miss at least two games this week. The Canucks host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday before heading to St. Louis for a date with the Blues on Thursday.

New-look Canucks rewriting Vancouver’s story after painful 4 years

New-look Canucks rewriting Vancouver’s story after painful 4 years There are 77 games to go, so we’ll see. But Tuesday’s impressive 5-1 win against Detroit — and the means in which in it was achieved — was unfamiliar to those on the West Coast who have suffered with the Canucks the last four years. The post New-look Canucks rewriting Vancouver’s story after painful 4 years appeared first on Sportsnet.ca.It wasn’t just that they were a rebuilding team hopelessly short of being good enough to compete into April for a playoff spot, it was all the little disappointments, the disillusionments, along the way.

The Vancouver Canucks have recalled defenceman Ashton Sautner from the Utica Comets this morning. This move follows Chris Tanev leaving the game last night against Nashville early. Without confirmation, we can’t say for sure, but it’s fair to suggest that prognosis on Tanev isn’t great.

This time around, Sautner is taking Tyler Motte’s spot on the roster as the fourth-line winger has been placed on the injured reserve list because of a foot injury sustained while blocking a shot in Friday’s 6-5 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals. He was spotted wearing a walking boot and using crutches following Monday night’s game against the Florida Panthers.

Fantenberg has recovered, but has yet to appear in a game, so it’s possible the Canucks are looking at Sautner as a fitter replacement, should an extra defenceman be needed. Through the season’s first 11 games, the Canucks have used the same six defencemen in every game.

It was announced on Tuesday afternoon that Fantenberg has been assigned to Utica on a conditioning stint.

The Canucks head to California with a full 23-man roster, as Adam Gaudette was called up on Sunday to be the team’s 13th forward, while Loui Eriksson stepped back into the lineup in Motte’s place after having been a healthy scratch.

Despite his two recalls this season, nearly all Sautner’s time as an NHL scratch has been spent on the road.

Assuming he stays through the weekend at minimum, Sautner will miss at least three Comets games during the current recall: Wednesday vs. Binghamton, Friday vs. Providence and Saturday vs. Rochester.
