Player grades: Edmonton Oilers grin and Bear it, hold off Red Wings 2-1 Red Wings 1, Oilers 2 Edmonton Oilers got the job done on Friday night, barely. Or is that Bear-ly? The Oil’s youngest player, rookie defenceman Ethan Bear, scored a key goal for the second straight game to put the home side ahead 2-0. That seemingly “safe” lead against a tired opponent turned out to be just enough, as the Detroit Red Wings cut the lead in half, kept battling right to the end, and fell just short as the Oilers hung on to a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Edmonton Oilers 4 Columbus Blue Jackets 1

Prior to this evening, the Edmonton Oilers had scored 1 loan goal in their previous 6 1st Periods.

So it speaks volumes when I say that the 4-1 win Wednesday in Columbus ran the Oilers record to a perfect 6-and-0 on the season in games where they scored…wait for it…

First. Go figure, huh?

And while the star players shone again, that rarest of birds secondary scoring showed up at an opportune time as well.

Player grades: With a little help from above, Mike Smith steals a point for punchless Oilers Oilers 0, Jets 1 (SO) I’m not sure if the ice was bad at Bell MTS Place, or maybe they forgot to freeze the pucks. Whatever the issue, both the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets struggled to hit a friendly stick with a pass or the opposition net with a shot. The two teams ground their way through a frenetically-paced 65 minutes of hockey without a goal to show for it. The scrambly affair was ultimately decided in the shootout when the Jets were finally able to solve Mike Smith, while the Oil never did figure out Connor Hellebuyck. The Oilers held the edge on the shot clock at 28-23 including 26-13 at 5v5, but the Jets had a 11-8 edge in Grade A scoring chances.

The Oilers remain tops in the West at 9-4-1 for 19 points.

Here’s the tale of the tape:

Edmonton Oilers Player Grades

MIKE SMITH. 7. 23 saves for his 1st win in 5, now 4-3-1 on the year. A terrific toe save on Boone Jenner in the 1st. A good stop on Dubois in the 2nd. One more nice deny off Milano in the 3rd. But as solid as he was in between the pipes, Smith’s highlight of the night was on offence: Spotted Columbus making an iffy line change on the 1st Period Power Play, looked off one defender and then sent a splendid pass up the middle to start the sequence that ended with the 1-0. he won’t get an assist for that, but it was a thing of beauty.

CONNOR McDAVID. 7. Danced the line to draw an assist on the James Neal opener. Set up Alex Chiasson for a late 1st Period shot. His pass set Zack Kassian loose for a 2nd Period chance. No let-up with the lead, as McDavid dropped deep into his own zone in the 3rd for a key defensive play below his own goal line. Led the Oilers in All Events CF with an astonishing 37-12, 76%. Excellent all night long, which is just another way of complimenting his line-mate who was even better still…

Hurricanes most linked team to any trade for Jesse Puljujarvi

Hurricanes most linked team to any trade for Jesse Puljujarvi Edmonton may or may not want to keep the Finnish forward, but one team would be very interested in bringing him on.The Athletic’s Allan Mitchell tries to put Puljujarvi’s production into context rather than let the hype train run wild. He writes that there is some question as to the quality of a few of Puljujarvi’s six goals on the year and, more importantly, adds that his point-per-game pace in the Liiga is only equivalent to approximately 0.43 points per game in the NHL.

Draisaitl and McDavid sparked an Oilers comeback win on home ice against the Washington Capitals. Leon Draisaitl scored 1 :18 into overtime giving the Edmonton Oilers a 4 -3 win over the Zack Kassian looked to get one back for the Oilers , but Braden Holtby came up with a stretching left

The Edmonton Oilers have lost six of their last seven games and drop 10 spots in No. 21 this week The Columbus Blue Jackets , who won five straight before losing to the Leafs on Friday, make After missing over a month, the Bruins welcomed back Patrice Bergeron who had four points (two goals

LEON DRAISAITL. 9. The best offensive and defensive player on the ice. And his 2 goals Wednesday night draws Draisaitl to within 1 of a franchise record for goals in October held by #99. The 1st was a dagger of a one-timer off a perfect pass by Nugent-Hopkins. Then he drained a silky smooth pass from Zack Kassian for his 2nd of the night. A picture-perfect pass sent James Neal away for the 1st of the game earlier in the evening. But Draisaitl also put on a clinic on a Columbus 5-on-3 with no less than 3 key plays that disrupted the Blue Jackets’ attack. That was the best of a tremendous night on the other side of the puck, too. Named the game’s 1st Star. Now the NHL scoring leader. Leading contender for the Selke. What. A. Player.

ZACH KASSIAN. 7. Sent an absolutely gorgeous saucer pass on to Leon Draisaitl for the 4-0, chasing the Columbus goaltender. Just missed a 2nd Period opportunity when his poke-shot just squibbed wide. Impressive 2nd Period back-check. Took a 2nd Period penalty. A great defensive play along the wall in the 3rd. Was very good on both sides of the puck.

Player grades: Oilers show up late for work again and it costs them 2 points in Detroit

Player grades: Oilers show up late for work again and it costs them 2 points in Detroit Oilers 1, Red Wings 3 If there was one obvious game plan for Dave Tippett and the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, it was to be ready for the start of the darn game. The Oilers had been outscored by a combined 9-1 over the first two periods of their prior three games, allowing goals in rapid succession in each of them. They were fortunate to pull one out in a massive comeback but got thoroughly dominated in the other two. After getting his first taste of pro hockey with the Condors at the tail end of their 2016-17 season, Gambardella became a mainstay on the roster the following year. In his first taste of NHL action, the Staten Island, New York, native put up three assists in 15 NHL games with the Oilers this past season.

DARNELL NURSE. 8. He and Ethan Bear were the best D-pairing on the ice. 2 blocks and a timely stick on a 2nd Period Columbus power play that Nurse, Klefbom and Draisaitl were flat-out excellent on. It was the bold-face on an over-all excellent effort by the top pairing.

ETHAN BEAR. 7. Made a great play to both thwart a Columbus sortie and then draw a 2nd 1st Period PP. A heady play at the line led directly to a near-miss on a chance by Kassian. A 2nd Period chance on a pass by Gaetan Haas. 2 big defensive plays on a late 2nd Period Columbus power play. Another big 3rd Period stuff on Foligno. Did get beat in the neutral zone, creating a 2-on-1 in the other direction. Led the defence in All Events CF at 19-7, 73%.

RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS. 8. A head’s up play on the power play, as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins collected his own rebound and then demonstrated excellent vision by spying a wide-open Leon Draisaitl open on the faceoff circle for the 2-0. Drew a 2nd Period PP. A key 2nd Period play in his own end stopped a dangerous looking Columbus effort. Ended the night with 3 shots, 3 hits in 18:05 and went 50% in the face-off circle to pace the club. His best game of the year.

Good goaltending sustains the Edmonton Oilers as they enjoy one of their best starts in franchise history: 9 Things

Good goaltending sustains the Edmonton Oilers as they enjoy one of their best starts in franchise history: 9 Things This Edmonton Oilers club is a playoff team. Book it. If the Oilers do nothing but play .500 hockey the rest of the way with no loser points (unlikely) they would finish with 89 points. That would be just one shy of what gave the Colorado Avalanche a playoff berth in the Western Conference last season. And this year’s Oilers are 6 points ahead of last season’s pace. Bottom line? As of November 2 nd 2019 the Oilers 21 points are one more than what Nashville led the West with on this date one year ago. That and more in this week’s edition of… 9 Things9. Scottie Upshall is playing in the Swiss “A” league with hopes of representing Canada at the Spengler Cup this Christmas.

SAM GAGNER. 6. A significant part of a very effective 2nd line for the Oilers. Sam made the key play on the 3-0 and Gagner picked the defender on the wall and deftly touch-passed the disk off to Nugent-Hopkins, and then Khaira for the goal. A defensive play created a chance for Alex Chiasson. Set up Jujhar Khaira for an excellent chance early. Then rounded out the 1st with a neat pass for a Nugent-Hopkins chance. A smart defensive play in the neutral zone skidded a Columbus attack in the 3rd. Fits in well with Nuge and Khaira.

JUJHAR KHAIRA. 7. By far and away his best game of the season and Khaira was indeed excellent. His night started off strong with an excellent stick in the O-zone to thwart a Jackets exit. Then he rang a pass from Gagner off the post…a harbinger of things to come perhaps? Deked out a defender and directed a wicked wrister on net. Then finally broke his season-long goose-egg by going to the net on a play by Nugent-Hopkins and practically willed the puck home. To my eye, Tippett rewarded him with extra shifts at C in the 3rd Period (in a rotation replacing Sheahan). 2 shots, 5 hits.

OSCAR KLEFBOM. 7. Hit a 1st Period post on the PP which eventually netted the 1-0. Led a very good D-core on the night in TOI at 27:19. Klefbom had 5 shots (most on the team), 4 blocks, skated miles and was +2. 35-29-17, 55% All Events CF,

Jesse Puljujarvi Edmonton Oilers saga continue

Jesse Puljujarvi Edmonton Oilers saga continue Jesse Puljujarvi Edmonton Oilers saga continueJesse’s unwillingness to return has nothing to do with current coaches, management, the team, fans or the city. Like I have said multiple times, Jesse has just asked for a change of scenery and to get a fresh start somewhere else. Nothing wrong with that considering the past three seasons. It is very difficult for me to see that he would return there all of a sudden now…. If things don’t work out now with the right team and best possible fit, there is nothing wrong (with playing) the whole season in Europe.

JOEL PERSSON. 5. Won’t get an assist but a nice outlet pass started the sequence that ended in the Khaira goal. Generally moved the puck well all night long but was also a constant adventure in his own zone without it on his stick in the 1st 40 minutes before settled down in the 3rd.

GAETAN HAAS. 5. A 2nd Period giveaway. Same period a nice pass led to an Ethan Bear opportunity. A dangerous 3rd Period wrist shot. 33% on FO’s. Had extra jump in his step since being re-called but still “just o.k.”.

ALEX CHIASSON. 6. Dug the puck out of the corner on the PP and onto the stick for #93, who found Draisaitl for the 2-0. Rang a 1st Period post after a steal by Gagner created the chance. A rough sequence in the 2nd where he committed a giveaway and then was subsequently beaten to the same puck. But then busted his ass on a late 2nd Period back-check. Just missed on a 3rd Period pass from Gagner.

JAMES NEAL. 6. Scored a no-doubter as he smartly converted a sweet Draisaitl pass for his 11th of the year. 1st Period giveaway. Set up Alex Chiasson for a good 3rd Period chance and followed it up with another of his own but was denied. Not a perfect game but Neal is doing what they brought him here to do: Score.

KRIS RUSSELL. 6. Nice 1st Period pinch. Quiet, effective veteran game. Looked way more at-home and under control on his strong side. Russell and Benning had the upper hand in a parade of favorable match-ups.

MATT BENNING. 6. Drew a 1st Period PP. Intercepted his man and (in the process) a dangerous chance in front of his own net in the 3rd Period. Having having a very solid season back there.

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby leaves game with lower-body injury

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby leaves game with lower-body injury Sidney Crosby, the Penguins' leading scorer, blocked a shot with his ankle and also caught his skate awkwardly in a win against the Blackhawks. The Penguins' leading scorer left the game after playing one shift during the third period.

RILEY SHEAHAN. 5. Drew a 1st Period PP. But then absorbed a late 1st Period hit (which was clean) that he did not return from. They’ll miss him if he’s gone long. While Riley Sheahan has had trouble scoring he is a real NHL Center and an important part of the Oilers PK.

MARKUS GRANLUND. 5. Good 2nd Period clear. I felt for him in the 2nd Period PK where his stick snapped in the D-zone early on. The 4-some bent and didn’t break until late in the advantage and with all of them gassed. That’s just bad luck. A decent 3rd period takeaway in the O-zone. Better.

PATRICK RUSSELL . 5. Came close on a 2nd period set-up by McDavid & Granlund. Effective work on the PK. Dogged along the boards, won lots of battles, and severely limited his mistakes.

Next up…the Oilers toughest assignment so far this season:

The Pittsburgh Penguins.

Oilers 6, Ducks 2 Well that was fun. Edmonton Oilers came out hard against their old friends the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, encountered some early resistance, but eventually took full command with superior skill, speed, and execution. The Oilers scored twice in each period to roll to a convincing 6-2 win at the Pond. It was a game where Edmonton’s top stars stood up to be counted — Connor McDavid hat trick, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 2 goals, Leon Draisaitl 4 assists — but had plenty of support throughout the line-up, notably from a penalty kill crew that closed down 5 Anaheim powerplay opportunities, allowing just 4 shots and 0 goals.
