Qualifying offer roundup: Donaldson, Wheeler among 1st to receive QOs Ahead of Major League Baseball's free-agent signing period, teams have to extend qualifying offers to prospective free agents before Monday at 5 p.m. ET. The qualifying offer is set at $17.8 million, and if a player accepts, they'd receive the salary in the form of a one-year contract. If they decline, they'd become free agents. Teams that have their qualifying offers declined will receive draft-pick compensation if the player signs with a new club before the 2020 MLB Draft in June.Players have until Nov. 14 to accept or decline.

With Zack Wheeler set to hit free agency after the 2019 season, GM Whether Van Wagenen's meeting with Wheeler ' s agents will involve a discussion of a potential long-term deal remains to be seen, but it's something the Mets would be wise to be open to given Wheeler ' s age and breakout 2018.

The Houston Astros have joined the list of reported Zack Wheeler suitors. Wheeler is scheduled to start on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates after coming off the injured list following right shoulder fatigue issues. The impending free agent has recorded 130 strikeouts in 119 innings with a 3.66

The GM meetings are only just getting underway, but the Houston Astros aren't wasting any time.

Representatives from the AL pennant-winning club have already met with members of Jet Sports, the agency representing Zack Wheeler, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Houston has reportedly had sustained interest in the 29-year-old and was among his suitors when the New York Mets were said to be shopping him ahead of this past summer's trade deadline.

The Mets wound up retaining Wheeler and have since tendered him a one-year qualifying offer worth $17.8 million. The right-hander is widely expected to reject the offer, which will attach him to draft-pick compensation on the free-agent market.

Astros owner: 'We're going to take a run' at re-signing Cole

Astros owner: 'We're going to take a run' at re-signing Cole Don't rule out the Houston Astros in the upcoming Gerrit Cole sweepstakes. Owner Jim Crane said Monday that the Astros want to bring the free-agent ace back, but it should be a challenge. "We’re going to take a run at it," Crane said, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. "We don't know if we can get to where they want to get. (Agent Scott) Boras is tough to deal with." Crane added that the Astros could exceed the luxury tax threshold in 2020.Houston did offer Cole a $17.8 million qualifying offer on Monday. However, it's a near certainty the AL Cy Young finalist will reject it as he's likely to receive a contract in free agency in excess of $200 million.
