Oilers captain Connor McDavid scored a brilliant goal on the team's first shot of the game 1:31 into the first. For the first 40 minutes of Saturday’s game at Rogers Place you could be forgiven for thinking that these Oilers had finally done it. They had finally slain the dragon that is matinees for this club. Over the first 2 periods Edmonton was the better team.

But alas, they play 60 (+) for a reason.

And after that big 3 rd Period fall from a 4-2 lead, all Dave Tippett’s horses and all of his men couldn’t put it together again in O/T.

Why not?

9 Things

9. Tomas Mazura has officially committed to NCAA Providence for the 2020-21 season and beyond. The Oilers prospect was drafted in the 6 th Round (162 nd over-all) of the June draft. The Czech-born Center us currently a Senior at Kimball Union. He had a goal and 3 assists in their victorious 7-1 season opener.

8. Tyler Benson and Brad Malone are leading the way offensively for the Bakersfield Condors this year in terms of points per game. Malone is 4-10-14 in 14, Benson 5-8-13 in 15. The recently re-called Caleb Jones had led the back-end with 2-8-10 in 13 GP. But Evan Bouchard is not far back at all at 3-6-9 in 15. Boxcars don’t tell you everything about development, but it helps…

7. I believe that we will see a Oilers transaction by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest when Adam Larsson will be activated from the I.R. The decision then will be which D-man to send down to Bakersfield in order to make room. It will be either Jones or Joel Persson . I expect that latter. Some AHL action would help slow down the game for Persson and add in some confidence. At this point Jones is the better NHL D-man.

Oilers' Klefbom calls loss to Cup champs 'a lesson for us'

Oilers' Klefbom calls loss to Cup champs 'a lesson for us' Despite an unexpectedly hot start to the season, the Edmonton Oilers weren't up to the task when measuring themselves against the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues on Wednesday. St. Louis handed Edmonton a 5-2 home loss and claimed its sixth consecutive victory while maintaining its hold of first place in the Western Conference. The Blues' ability to close out the win was something the Oilers took note of afterward. "This was a lesson forSt. Louis handed Edmonton a 5-2 home loss and claimed its sixth consecutive victory while maintaining its hold of first place in the Western Conference. The Blues' ability to close out the win was something the Oilers took note of afterward.

About a year ago, after a particularly brutal loss to Buffalo, Todd McLellan ripped into his team. Neal is the first Oilers player to score nine goals in eight games since Glenn Anderson did it 1987-88 Hintz and Heiskanen are some of the only Stars off to the starts you’d expect, with Seguin parked at

EDMONTON — The Dallas Stars ' dreadful 1-7-1 start to the season is quickly becoming a faded memory. It's another thing to believe you can do it," said Stars head coach Jim Montgomery. Dallas started the scoring nine minutes into the opening period as the Oilers failed to clear the zone.

6. Did Dave Tippett go to the whip too early Saturday? Look, I’m not an NHL coach. But Tippett had a 4 th line in Gaetan Haas , Sam Gagner and Markus Granlund that (while certainly not perfect) was winning most of their shifts. Their respective CF’s (All Events) were 70, 62 and 65%. Yet the trio did not see the ice again together after the 2:15 mark of the 3 rd Period. Dallas, on the other hand, used its entire bench down the stretch.

5. We saw a flash Saturday of how a Oilers 1 st Unit power play could look with Ethan Bear on it. Bear scored the 4 th goal of the night on the man advantage on a gorgeous effort. The Oilers typically over-loaded the left side, allowing Bear to dart in from the point, receive a slick McDavid pass on his forehand (he’s a right shot) and shelf it on Anton Khudobin . Oscar Klefbom is a perfectly capable PP guy. But perhaps splitting the difference between he & Bear would provide 2 different wrinkles to defend against.

Edmonton Oilers sink against San Jose Sharks

Edmonton Oilers sink against San Jose Sharks The Oilers have lost five straight against the Sharks. The Sharks were in complete control of the first period.

The Dallas Stars made it to Game 7 of the second round without Tyler Seguin, but their season came to a crashing halt with their 6-1 loss to the St. Louis This latest win came with a potentially big cost, however, as Sidney Crosby exited the game early in the third period after a tough shift that saw him

The Dallas Stars suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of the Lightning to wrap up their road Scoring is the first thing that needs to pick up. The top three scoring leaders on the Stars are Jamie The Stars return home on Saturday to face the Edmonton Oilers , another high caliber offense, but

4. Saturday’s loss was the 10 th time so far this season that the Oilers had scored 4 goals or more. Yet it was the first time, as my Cult of Hockey colleague Bruce McCurdy points out, that they have lost when they’ve done so. 3 of the Oilers 4 goals on this night came from players other than their Top 6. More often than not when that happens this club will win. Tremendous game by Jujhar Khaira in particular. Whether Khaira is capable of this has rarely been in question. Rather doing so consistently has been the puzzle.

3. And a 5-4 O/T loss is certainly no reason to panic. The club has 29 points in 22 games, 1 st in the Pacific with American Thanksgiving just 5 games away. If the Edmonton Oilers don’t even register a single point in any of the remaining matches before the turkey is carved, they would still equal what the Pacific Division leaders had one year ago. And better than 78% of teams in an NHL playoff spot (forget being in 1 st place) by that day go on to make the post-season. It was also the first time in 9 games that the Oilers had led after 2 and lost. Sometimes the odds stack against you.

McDavid, Draisaitl combine for 11 points in Oilers' win over Avalanche

McDavid, Draisaitl combine for 11 points in Oilers' win over Avalanche McDavid, Draisaitl combine for 11 points in Oilers' win over AvalancheRyan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals and Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers (13-6-2), who have won three of their last four games.

In fact, the Stars have seven streaks of at least three losses this season. You knew the goaltending situation was going to be. The amount of money someone’s going to throw at Karl Alzner this summer is already unconscionable, and after that your best option honestly might be Brendan Smith.

The Oilers Moms Trip had officially started as 18 players' mothers, Riley Sheahan's sister Karli and Head Coach Brian kept that tradition going with Matt, enrolling him in lessons , but it was Caroline who often had to grapple with edmontonoilers .com is the official Web site of the Edmonton Oilers .

2. The season that Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are having over-all this year has an historic air about it. Though 22 games the pair have eclipsed the 40-point mark already (Draisaitl 43, McDavid 40). They are 1-2 in the NHL and 8 ahead of their xt nenearest competitor (Boston’s David Pastrnak has 32). Since 1989-90, this is only the 3 rd time that teammates have passed the 40-mark this early. The other 2 groupings: Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza for Ottawa in 2005-06, and Mario Lemieux , Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis in 1995-96. Pretty heady company.

1.There are no 2 players who I would sooner have for the Oilers during 3-on-3 Overtime than McDavid and Draisaitl. They are the deadliest duo that I can think of. However, against teams with well above average depth such as Dallas I wonder if a different tactic could/should be employed? The Stars got the better of the match=ups in extra time Saturday by starting Jason Dickenson and Joe Pavelski . Both are strong defensive players and Pavelski a super-smart NHL veteran. Connor and Leon had barely touched the puck when Dallas got it’s first change in. By the time that Connor had turned it over in the Stars zone, he and Leon were winded…and stuck out at the end of their shift against a fresh Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin. The Dallas duo ended it at 1:14.

Benn scores overtime winner as Stars take 5-4 victory over Oilers

Benn scores overtime winner as Stars take 5-4 victory over Oilers The Dallas Stars' dreadful 1-7-1 start to the season is quickly becoming a faded memory. Jamie Benn scored the overtime winner as the Stars rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

+ The Dallas Stars finally have some positive momentum going. Patrick Eaves had a goal and an assist and Kari Lehtonen made 40 saves as the Stars won their second game in as many nights, coming away with a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

The Edmonton Oilers scored early. The Oilers , tied in points with the San Jose Sharks, are one point back of the Anaheim Ducks for the Pacific Division lead after their 7-3 win over the Flames. The alternate captain took the puck from Tyler Seguin in his own zone, then darted toward the other end

I do believe that a tired McDavid and Draisaitl are better than the large majority of rested NHL players. But it’s tough for even the very best to be sucking wind against Seguin and Benn.

Perhaps in this instance caution is the better part of valor. At the :47 mark, take the opportunity and swap with fresh troops. A well-rested Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is no slouch, after all.

Live to see another day. Or at least another shift.
