After the Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Mike Babcock on Wednesday afternoon, all eyes turned to the man who took his spot — Sheldon Keefe.

The new Leafs bench boss makes his NHL debut on Thursday night in Arizona — with the lofty expectations of ending the team's six-game skid. However, Keefe will not only have the comfort of more than a handful of players on the roster that he has coached in the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies, but he'll also have general manager Kyle Dubas firmly in his corner.

Dubas and Keefe go way back, to the days of junior hockey.

Want a Sweet Gig? Don’t Coach the Toronto Maple Leafs TORONTO — If there is one thing most hockey observers can agree on, it’s that coaching the Toronto Maple Leafs is a perilous job. TORONTO — Sheldon Keefe's tenure as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs couldn't have started any better. A re-energized roster blasted out of the gate with a trio of road wins following Mike Babcock's dismissal, playing an inspired, puck-possession style that produced 14 goals for and just three against. Another change under Keefe — a rookie behind an NHL bench, but one with a parallel view to Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas about how the game should be played — was practice habits. There was more emphasis on skill development, while music blasted throughout Toronto's facility during some drills.
