Peters will not coach Flames against Sabres
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The latest on allegations that current Calgary Flames coach Bill Peters made racist comments a decade ago (all times local): 8:40 p.m. Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving says coach Bill Peters will not coach the team Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres. Associate coach Geoff Ward, who oversaw practice on Tuesday, will handle the coaching duties. Treliving had no other updates as the investigation continues into the allegation Peters directed racial slurs toward Akim Aliu when he and the Nigerian-born player were in the minors a decade ago.___1:15 p.m.
As the Calgary Flames work towards a resolution following allegations made towards head coach Bill Peters, a different allegation made by former player Michal Jordan has been corroborated by current Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour.
“It for sure happened, the two issues that are in question,” Brind’Amour said of Jordan’s allegations.
On Tuesday, Jordan, who played parts of two seasons under Peters in Carolina, when Brind’Amour served as an assistant, alleged on Twitter that Peters kicked him and punched another player during a game.
Former Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis reportedly did not tell owner Peter Karmanos about physical abuse allegations
Current Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters is accused of physically hitting two players during his tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes.“I’m pretty upset,” said Karmanos, who stressed that then-general manager Ron Francis did not inform him about the allegations. "And I have my calls in to Ronnie as well. I think he’s the one who’s going to have to tell people what he did when he found out that the coach had done these things.
The Calgary Flames have not yet made Bill Peters available to comment on any allegations against him.
“To me, it’s what happened after that I’m proud about actually, the way the players handled it, and the way the support staff handled it, which was to bring it to management right away,” Brind’Amour continued. “And then management handled it directly and never heard of it again. And never saw anything else after that.
“So, it was definitely dealt with, in my opinion, correctly, and that’s the last I need to talk about it.”
On Monday night, Aliu alleged on Twitter that Peters had directed a racial slur towards him “several times” while the two were together in the AHL. Aliu played for Peters when he was head coach of the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s AHL affiliate, for five games in the 2008-09 season and 48 games in 2009-10.
On Tuesday, Flames GM Brad Treliving said Peters had not been relieved of his duties, but that an investigation was ongoing.
Peters was not present at Flames practice the past two days, and will not be on the bench when they play the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night.
