What Does The Deputy Prime Minister Do? Explaining Chrystia Freeland’s New Role

What Does The Deputy Prime Minister Do? Explaining Chrystia Freeland’s New Role Among the many changes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brought with Wednesday’s cabinet shuffle, Chrystia Freeland is no longer in charge of foreign affairs. Instead, she is Canada’s new deputy prime minister as well as intergovernmental-affairs minister. But what does the deputy prime minister do? The role was first introduced when Trudeau’s father, Pierre Trudeau, was prime minister. The senior Trudeau named Allan J. MacEachen deputy prime minister in 1977 to commemorate his many years of public service.Including Freeland, Canada has had 10 deputy prime ministers.

The Ottawa Senators have reassigned D Erik Brannstrom, and G Marcus Hogberg to their AHL affiliate in Belleville.

Brannstrom, who was the principle piece in February’s Mark Stone trade, has played 25 games with the Sens this year, posting two assists. Despite the lack of offence, he’s had a solid start to the campaign, with a Corsi rating of 50.40%, which is comparable to Thomas Chabot. That said, the Senators need him contributing on the scoresheet, and playing big minutes coupled with first powerplay time in Belleville will likely help to get that part of his game going again.

Tkachuk’s OT Winner Lifts Sens over Habs 2-1 They’re on a roll now, winning 6 of their last 8 gamesTonight’s game featured a pre-game ceremony honouring former Canadien and recent Hall of Fame inductee Guy Carbonneau. Ron Hainsey took the ceremonial face-off on behalf of the Sens, a pretty nice moment for him as he was drafted by the Habs way back in 2000(!) while Carbonneau was still on the team.

Not only are the Senators hot garbage and likely to be fishing for the NHL’s top pick come June, but they’ re currently riding a five-game losing streak that the Oilers need to find a way to extend. We know there are no gimme games in the NHL, every team can win on any given night, the Oilers need to

The move will give Max Lajoie another extended look in Ottawa, with Christian Wolanin not due back for another 1-2 months at least.

Hogberg’s demotion is less noteworthy, as Craig Anderson is now healthy once again. Hogberg is on a one-way contract next year, though, so it will be interesting to see if he gets a real stint in Ottawa before the end of the season.

The Senators have a matinee contest in Philadelphia on Saturday, taking on the Flyers. Belleville, meanwhile, hosts the Cleveland Monsters tomorrow night at CAA Arena.
