Kamaru Usman seems to be warming up to the idea of a fight with Conor McGregor.

The UFC welterweight champion said he would be willing to square off with the Irishman, but only if he proves himself as a worthy contender in the division.

"Conor doesn’t even really make sense. Sure, if he comes in the division and beats someone pretty high up there and really makes the case for himself that he can really handle himself in the division, then absolutely I would entertain that fight," Usman told MMA Fighting's Damon Martin.

When McGregor hinted last month he wanted to win a UFC belt in a third weight class, Usman initially brushed off the potential matchup.

McGregor, who returns against Donald Cerrone in a welterweight bout at UFC 246 on Jan. 18, recently confirmed he is indeed chasing gold at both 155 and 170 pounds.

"I like the look of Kamaru Usman," McGregor said. "I'm after the gold - 155, 170, they're the belts I am chasing now."

It's unclear what the Irishman's next move will be if he beats "Cowboy." The UFC wants him to fight the Khabib Nurmagomedov versus Tony Ferguson winner, and McGregor is angling for a Nurmagomedov rematch, too. But he's also talked about fights with Usman, Jorge Masvidal, and Justin Gaethje.

Usman is coming off his first title defense, a fifth-round TKO of Colby Covington in last month's UFC 245 main event.

John Kavanagh, Conor McGregor's head coach, wants his fighter to take on Justin Gaethje at welterweight in his next bout. "That would be my personal preference," Kavanagh said Monday during "Ariel Helwani's MMA Show." "He's another lightweight, but neither of them have to cut weight The vision is getting that 155-pound belt back, so it's a step towards that." McGregor has several options following his win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 on Saturday. Potential opponents include the winner of lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov versus Tony Ferguson, Jorge Masvidal, and welterweight champ Kamaru Usman.
