Sports Jaguars fire offensive co-ordinator DeFilippo after 1 season
Report: Jaguars plan to hire Jay Gruden as OC
The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to hire former Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden as their offensive coordinator, sources told Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Gruden called plays throughout his tenure with the Redskins, and prior to that when he served as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. He is a disciple of the west coast offense. Gruden led the Redskins beginning in 2014 up until his firing five games into the 2019 season. He amassed a 35-49-1 record as the head coach in Washington. The Jaguars began searching for a new offensive coordinator after firing John DeFilippo at the end of his first season.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired offensive co-ordinator John DeFilippo after one season.
Coach Doug Marrone made the decision Monday, the day his assistants returned from a brief break following the regular-season finale.
It's the second time in 13 months that DeFilippo has been let go. Minnesota fired him in December 2018 after less than one season on the job. He landed in Jacksonville and was reunited with quarterback Nick Foles. “Flip” was Foles' quarterback coach in Philadelphia in 2017, the season when the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Foles was the MVP of the title game.
Snow rejoins Rhule as Panthers new defensive co-ordinator
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Phil Snow is rejoining head coach Matt Rhule in Carolina as the new Panthers defensive co-ordinator. Snow previously served as defensive co-ordinator under Rhule at Baylor from 2017-19 and Temple from 2013-16. Snow has spent 37 seasons coaching college football, serving as a defensive co-ordinator at seven previous schools, including UCLA, Washington, Arizona State and Boise State. He also worked as an assistant coach with the Detroit Lions for four seasons (2005-08).Under Snow, Baylor ranked 41st in the nation in total defence last season, and finished second in takeaways with 30, third in interceptions with 17 and eighth in sacks per game at 3.3.
The Jaguars (6-10) ranked 20th in the league in total offence and 26th in scoring. They had a 1,000-yard rusher (Leonard Fournette) and a 1,000-yard receiver (DJ Chark) for the first time since 2004. But the offence rarely looked smooth, and Fournette openly criticized the play-calling at times.
It also appears Jacksonville is ready to move forward with Gardner Minshew as its starter, with Foles serving as a high-priced backup in 2020.
Now, Marrone will search for a replacement for DeFilippo going into what seems to be a playoffs-or-overhaul season in Jacksonville.
Owner Shad Khan kept Marrone and general manager Dave Caldwell despite public calls for a reboot, and Khan made it clear that expectations would be high. Marrone and Caldwell have two years remaining on their contracts.

After a month in Australia, two Manitoba fire experts arrive home .
WINNIPEG — Some of the first Canadian wildfire experts to help out in Australia are back home. Gerry Rosset and Andrew Prokopchuk, two Manitoba conservation officers, landed at the Winnipeg airport after more than five weeks of working in fire control centres Down Under. Rosset says the fires in Australia are unlike anything he has seen in his 38 years on the job. Prokopchuk says one fire had a perimeter of 1,000 square kilometres, and he remembers the sky being very dark, even far from the blazes. Prokopchuk says Australians were very happy to see assistance from other countries, and many wanted to hug the Canadian helpers.
