Toronto Maple Leafs’ Andreas Johnsson needs surgery on his knee and will be out of the lineup for at least eight weeks, head coach Sheldon Keefe announced Friday.

Johnsson suffered the injury midway through the first period of the Leafs’ 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. He collided with teammate Kasperi Kapenen and appeared to be in discomfort as he left for the dressing room.

Keefe said after the game Johnsson’s injury was “not going to be short term.”

The Leafs forward was previously on the long-term injured reserve earlier this season with a leg injury suffered against the Colorado Avalanche in December.

Johnsson has eight goals and 21 points in 43 games with Toronto this season.

The 25-year-old winger, who missed 15 games earlier this season with a separate leg injury, contributed eight goals and 21 points in 43 games.Toronto traded for a depth forward with NHL experience Wednesday, acquiring center Denis Malgin from the Florida Panthers in exchange for winger Mason Marchment.
