Kawasaki works driver Jonathan Rea secured pole position at the season finale in Qatar. The Brit set the fastest lap of the weekend with the extra-soft qualifying tire and prevailed against Yamaha drivers Alex Lowes and Sandro Cortese.

The pole lap from last year was the fastest time on the Losail International Circuit before the start of Superpole. Tom Sykes circled the 5.380 kilometer circuit twelve months ago at the Kawasaki farewell race in 1: 56.124 minutes. This record should not be reached this year.

Yamaha driver Alex Lowes started the session with plenty of momentum. The Briton took the lead in the first attempt with a 1: 57.217 lap. That was the fastest lap of the weekend so far. Markus Reiterberger (BMW) moved to sixth position with racing tires and was only half a second behind. At this point, Reiterberger was significantly faster than team-mate Tom Sykes, who was outside the top 10.

Significant improvements with the qualifying tire

Jonathan Rea was the first driver to go after the qualifying tire. The world champion increased by more than a second and took the lead with a 1: 56.246 lap. But he failed because of the existing lap record of ex-team-mate Sykes.

None of the drivers was able to beat Rea's time. Alex Lowes was the first chaser, 0.185 seconds back. Sandro Cortese was 0.283 seconds behind and pushed onto the front row.

Tom Sykes increased significantly with the qualifying tire and moved up to fourth place. The pole-setter from the previous year leads the second row, which will also feature Loris Baz (Ten-Kate-Yamaha) and Leon Haslam (Kawasaki).

Chaz Davies once again struggled to make progress from his fourth row starting spot, with a technical issue late on dropping him out of the points

No Ducati in the first two rows

The Superpole was disappointing for Ducati. Alvaro Bautista did not exceed the seventh fastest time and was more than a second behind. Teammate Chaz Davies was even worse. After Thursday's best time, expectations were high, but Davies only finished the Superpole in 12th place.

Michael van der Mark (Yamaha), who was also fast on Thursday, finished eighth in the Superpole. He is next to Alvaro Bautista and Markus Reiterberger in row three.

Toprak Razgatlioglu (Puccetti-Kawasaki) showed a disappointing Superpole and is next to Chaz Davies and Leandro Mercado (Orelac-Kawasaki) in row four.

Marco Melandri (GRT-Yamaha) did not get past 17th place in the final Superpole session of his WSBK career. Wildcard starter Dominic Schmitter (YART-Yamaha) came in last as 20th and was exactly four seconds behind.

Run one will start at 7:00 p.m. (CEST).
