Reirden was the top assistant to Barry Trotz when the Capitals won their lone Stanley Cup title in 2018. Trotz left the team in a contract dispute and later joined the New York Islanders. The Capitals promoted Reirden to the head coaching job.
“We have higher expectations for our team, and we felt a fresh approach in leadership was necessary,” general manager Brian MacLellan said in a statement. “We would like to thank Todd for all of his hard work and efforts with our organization. Todd has been a big part of our team for more than half a decade, including our Stanley Cup run in 2018, and we wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”

Tampa Bay Lightning make most of second chance, eliminate Columbus Blue Jackets
The Lightning, swept by the Blue Jackets in last season's NHL playoffs, oust them this time after a Brayden Point OT goal in Game 5.“We had 422 days to think about it, but who’s counting?” he told reporters.
Back-to-back early playoff exits were enough to make the Washington Capitals realize they made a mistake. On Sunday, the team fired Reirden days after losing a five-game series to Trotz's New York Islanders and moved toward hiring the seventh coach since Alex Ovechkin entered the NHL.
The Washington Capitals have fired coach Todd Reirden after a second consecutive first - round exit in the playoffs . General manager Brian MacLellan announced the move Sunday, three days after the Capitals lost to former coach Barry Trotz’s New York Islanders in a five-game series.
In two regular seasons, Reirden had a .642 winning percentage and won two division titles, but the team wasn't able to produce playoff success.
The Capitals' Stanley Cup defense in 2019 ended in the first round when they blew a 3-2 series lead and lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime in Game 7.
This season, the Capitals received a bye from the qualifying round, but they lost to Trotz's Islanders in five games.
The Capitals still have a strong core with Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, Tom Wilson, T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Now, it will be up to a new coach to get them back to the top.

Ranking the 5 best candidates to be the Capitals' next head coach .
Hiring Todd Reirden's replacement is one of the biggest decisions Brian MacLellan will face in his executive career. The Washington Capitals general manager fired his head coach on Sunday after just two seasons, and finding his successor will be an integral part of the franchise's quest for another Stanley Cup. Despite modest regular-season success, Reirden couldn't replicate the same defensive formula as his predecessor, Barry Trotz. In two seasons under Reirden, the Capitals ranked 19th in the NHL in goals against per 60 minutes at five-on-five (GA/60). In the previous two years under Trotz, Washington ranked first.
