Saints vs. Raiders odds for "Monday Night Football"

  • Spread: Saints by 5.5
  • Over/under: 48.5
  • Point spread odds: Saints -110, Raiders -110

The Saints opened a little higher, at 6 and 6.5 points in some places. But then came the ankle injury to Thomas to slow down their offense a little. This would have been greater than a touchdown and extra point if the game was not the Raiders' first home opener in Las Vegas.

Saints vs. Raiders all-time series

The Raiders last played the Saints in Week 1 of 2016, winning a 35-34 thriller in New Orleans. The Saints had won the previous three meetings dating back to 2004. This is the first time Las Vegas has hosted an opponent of any kind. Brees is 8-3 all-time against the Raiders dating back to his days with the AFC West's Chargers.

Three trends to know

— 60 percent of bettors like the total to go over in a game featuring two strong rushing offenses with a variety of big playmakers, even without Thomas.

— 58 percent of bettors like the Saints to cover the spread as road favorites. The Saints went 11-6 against the spread last season.

— 53 percent of moneyline bettors are going with the Raiders to win as night-game underdogs. They were 8-8 against the spread last season.

Three things to watch

Sanders and Cook vs. the Raiders' defense

With no Thomas, former Broncos and 49ers wideout Emmanuel Sanders will be the Saints' No. 1 wide receiver, with plenty of help from Tre'Quan Smith and Deonte Harris. Tight end Jared Cook, a recent former Raider, was very good during his first season in New Orleans and started well against Tampa Bay. The Raiders will miss Kwiatkoski in coverage and are inexperienced at cornerback. Brees can survive this game without Thomas involving all of them and the steady dose of Alvin Kamara in the passing game.

Jacobs vs. the Saints' defense

Josh Jacobs, the Raiders' second-year running back, abused the Panthers all afternoon in Week 1. He faces a much tougher run defense in the Saints' front seven this week. The Raiders will want to keep pounding him to play ball control, work the clock and help keep Brees off the field. They need to loosen the Saints up with the downfield passing game, however, with Derek Carr.

Dennis Allen revenge game?

The Saints played very well against the Bucs last week, being aggressive with pressure and making big plays in the secondary against Tom Brady. Allen, their defensive coordinator, dialed up a terrific game plan. He also used to be the Raiders' head coach, crossing over with Carr's rookie season. Allen will be eager to make Carr's life miserable to spoil the home opener for his old team in a new city.

Stat that matters

51. That's how many receiving yards Kamara had against the Buccaneers in Week 1. The Raiders couldn't handle Christian McCaffrey in a similar role last week. The Saints were disappointed that Kamara rushed for only 16 yards after getting his big contract against a tough Tampa Bay run defense. They will also get him going on the ground this week. He is a nightmare matchup on the second level.

Saints vs. Raiders prediction

The Raiders will be pumped to open their Death Star-looking palace near the Las Vegas Strip. They will come out fired up defensively and make some big plays offensively. But the Saints simply are better positioned to run the ball, move the ball consistently and then get in the face of Carr. New Orleans may need to rally a little, but it should hold off Las Vegas late once grabbing the second-half lead.
