LSU star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr ., who was hospitalized Friday , practiced Tuesday and is expected to play this week against Vanderbilt, coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday. He was discharged Saturday but did not play in LSU 's season-opening loss to Mississippi State .

Stingley was expected to be released from a Baton Rouge hospital Saturday morning.

"His condition is not COVID-19 related, and he is expected to be discharged soon," a statement released Saturday by LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said. "He will return to activity after full evaluation by the medical team. Derek Stingley Jr. became acutely ill last night and was evaluated overnight in the hospital."

Asked whether that statement meant Stingley could not play against Mississippi State, Bonnette said, "All we are saying is that he will return to activities once he's had a full medical evaluation. This is 100 percent a medical decision. I don't know what the timing of the evaluation will be."

Stingley is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the nation.
