Cincinnati Reds Play-By-Play Veteran Thom Brennaman Resigns After On-Air Slur

Cincinnati Reds Play-By-Play Veteran Thom Brennaman Resigns After On-Air Slur Longtime Cincinnati Reds TV broadcaster Thom Brennaman resigned Friday from the team and from Fox Sports Ohio a little more than a month after he was suspended for uttering an anti-gay slur on an open mic during a broadcast. He exits the role as the MLB franchise’s play-by-play announcer he has held since 2007 The incident occurred during the broadcast of a Reds-Kansas City Royals doubleheader August 19. Brennaman was picked up by a microphone after returning from a commercial break during Game 1 and, seemingly not aware that he was on the air, made the derogatory slur.

CLEVELAND — Trevor Bauer has thrown more pitches this season than any other major leaguer. Many pitches have not gone where he wanted, but this is the most fitting category for him to be leading. Bauer , a restless and relentless right-hander for the Cleveland Indians, is a pitching scientist on a

Trevor Bauer pitched a game for the ages Wednesday. Unfortunately for the Reds and Bauer, even a starting pitcher as durable and effective as him doesn’t go 13 innings in modern baseball.

The 13th inning was when the Reds lost it – to the Atlanta Braves, 1-0 – in the first game of the National League wild-card series.

He’ s the ultimate self-made star: an average (if that) athlete who leveraged a sharp baseball intellect and obsession with data into a Cy Young candidacy. He knows a whole lot more than the rest of us. So why does he act like he wants us to despise him?

Trevor Bauer will lead the Reds past the Braves in Game 1 of their NL wild-card series on Wednesday. He’ s gone more than six innings in each of his past four starts with totals of four runs and four walks surrendered. Bauer will be dueling Max Fried, who has put together a terrific season

Bauer went 7 ⅔ shutout innings. He allowed two hits, walked none and struck out 12. The 12 strikeouts were a Reds’ postseason record and the most by anyone in the postseason without allowing a walk.

“He gave us everything he had,” Reds manager David Bell said. “He just continues to respond to every opportunity, every big situation, every big start. Again, he just gave us everything he had. He can pitch, and he sure can compete.”

“It’s just fun to watch a pitcher like that be really in his element, love what he’s doing and getting the job done like that.”

Bauer took the loss hard.

“I’m disappointed,” he said. “Losing (bleeping) sucks. We’ve got a game (Thursday). We’ve got to come in and win that one and see where it goes in Game 3, I guess.”

Bauer, the 29-year-old right-hander, went 5-4 with a 1.74 ERA this season with 100 strikeouts and 17 walks in 73 innings to make himself the Cy Young Award favorite.

He went eight innings and allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out 12 in his final start of the regular season – a 6-1 win over Milwaukee that pretty much clinched a playoff spot.

He was better than that Wednesday.

Bauer worked a seven-pitch first. He pitched around Joey Votto’s error with two strikeouts in the second. He struck out the side in the third.

Bauer hit Freddie Freeman to start fourth. He retired the next two before Ozzie Albies reached on an infield single. Bauer got ex-Red Adam Duvall to take a third strike.

The Braves went in order in the fifth.

Bauer’s only real trouble came in the sixth. Ronald Acuna Jr. led off with an 111.1-mph shot off the wall in center for a double. But Bauer got Freeman to ground out and Marcell Ozuna on a popup to the catcher. Bauer then struck out Travis d'Arnaud with a 96-mph fastball.

Bauer did a little Tomahawk Chop to empty stands as he walked off the field.

“Big situation,” Bauer said. “Obviously in that game, (Max) Fried is pitching really well, so one run, as we saw, was going to be the difference. Leadoff double by Acuna,  you have to face the middle the order. It was a big moment. As I've done a lot of this year, I was able to get out of it. So, I was definitely thankful to have done that and given us a chance.”

Bauer worked a perfect eighth and got the first two hitters of eighth before giving way to Raisel Iglesias.

Bauer, who never likes to come out of a game, said he was okay with it.

“Yeah, I was exhausted,” he said.

It was hard to tell if he was sincere about that.

Iglesias got the final out of the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth as well.

Bauer watched as reliever after reliever put up zeros for the Reds, and the offense could not cash in opportunities. The Braves finally won it in 13th with two singles off Archie Bradley and a single from Freddie Freeman off Amir Garrett.”

“Those guys pitched really well,” Bauer said. “Every single one of them. Even in the last inning with Archie (Bradley), two balls it just sneak through. It's not his fault. He pitched well. Amir has been great all year. You can't fault the pitching. Everyone threw really well all day.”

The offense, not so much. Bauer, a veteran of the postseason, said winning in the postseason is the same as winning in the regular season.

“You’ve got to execute,” Bauer said. “We didn’t execute today.”
