Joey Logano is the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion and the driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford. Logano qualified for the NASCAR Playoffs in 2020 with a win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and qualified for the Championship 4 after a win at Kansas Speedway.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – On Sunday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway, it was “The Big Three and Me” — with the “Me” being Joey Logano waging vehicular war against the three most prolific winners in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series . Now “Me” is a champion .

The world was about to change in a way no one could have foreseen, but days before that, Joey Logano had a wild day on the Phoenix Raceway track.

Logano maneuvered on the track to avoid being caught up in crashes, and overcame a penalty for a loose tire and a slow pit stop because of a broken jack. He then fended off the hard-charging Kevin Harvick over two overtime laps to capture victory at NASCAR's Fan Shield 500 on March 8.

Logano, 30, is the last driver to win a race at the Avondale track. Eight months later, NASCAR is back in Arizona for Sunday's Cup Series championship race, and Logano is in the field of four, all of whom are equally capable of taking the title.

"It definitely feels like a long time ago. So many things have happened since then," Logano said Thursday. "It just showed that we had a very good car. We can make some tweaks here and there to the setup probably ... but we're not going to step way outside the box. That's really what we have to go back on, is just our notes from that race."

Logano was the 2018 Cup Series champion, and 2020 — with all of its twists and turns — feels somehow similar to how Logano was able to win it all two years ago.

"This year feels a lot like 2018, where we had not the best summer months, then we picked it up once the playoffs started," Logano said. "We went from in the summer months searching for a direction to make the car faster, to being in contention to win and now, in my eyes, like I said in 2018, feeling like you're the favorites by winning the first race of the third round. I also feel that way again."

Logano made it clear he sees himself as the favorite to win Sunday. The other three drivers in the championship four — Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott — chose not to put a label on their chances.

"The experience is there, the speed is there, the mentality of the way we race is there," Logano said. "I truly believe that we are the favorites to win this thing. That's important to me, and I feel like I have real things to back that up, which is good."

Logano's confidence is high in part because he is making his fourth career appearance in the championship four. He also has five top-five finishes at Phoenix Raceway, having led in 449 career laps at the track.

The four drivers were loose and relaxed speaking with reporters over a video call Thursday. Logano smiled often. Keselowski held up a plate of food and told a story about a giant beer glass he drank out of to celebrate his 2012 championship, and how it will be in Phoenix for him should he win Sunday.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred says 'baseball should be proud' of 2020 season

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred says 'baseball should be proud' of 2020 season The Dodgers were crowned World Series champions at the conclusion of a baseball season defined by the COVID-19 pandemic.“I think baseball should be proud of what it accomplished this year,’’ Manfred told USA TODAY Sports. “We faced challenges unlike any other in the history of the sport. We managed to confront them by working with the players, working with the clubs. I regard that to be a great success.

Both of Logano ’s wins in the Cup Series this year came in the season’s first four races. His best performance since NASCAR returned to action in May is a third at Texas Motor Speedway. Clearly, Logano would have liked to have won again before this weekend’s start of the playoffs at Darlington

Hamlin spoke of putting things in perspective, of how he has learned to enjoy life after putting in the necessary preparation time for races. Elliott talked about the famous Dawsonville Pool Room siren, the horn that blares through the Georgia town from a local restaurant when an Elliott wins a race.

"I don't worry. I think a lot, though," Logano said. "I'm pretty good at staying busy in my life, especially with the kids running around, everything that life kind of throws at you, right? I kind of categorize what I do."

A few days after his win in Phoenix, Logano had made his way out to Atlanta for the next scheduled race, which was ultimately canceled. The NASCAR circuit wouldn't be back for more than two months, but when it returned, Logano noted how drivers and teams who wouldn't even speak to one another under normal circumstances banded together to help NASCAR find a way to become the first major sport to return to competition.

"At that point your focus shifts a little bit to saying 'All right, where can we help? What can I do to help others, to help our sport get back on the road?'" Logano said.

Logano established a $1 million COVID-19 response and recovery fund through his foundation and a Charlotte-based community organization.

"I'm not  the person that's going to sit still," he said. "It's just not who I am. I'm not going to take advantage of it and say it's a vacation for nine weeks... my job at that point is to help people who need it the most and try to rally the troops together as a sport, and figure out how we get back to the racetrack in the safest way."
