The San Isidro movement was born in reaction to the adoption, in August 2018, of a decree prohibiting all artists from performing in public or private places without the prior authorization of the Ministry of Culture.
Decree 349 also prohibits artistic expression by virtue of very broad criteria such as "obscenity", "vulgarity" and "infringement of ethical and cultural values".
The members of the group have been protesting in recent days against the conviction of one of their own, rapper Denis Solis González, to eight months in prison for "contempt". Eight of them had announced that they had started a hunger strike. Their headquarters had been surrounded earlier this month by security forces.
In a statement released on November 20, Amnesty International denounced "the harassment and intimidation of members of the San Isidro movement (...) representative of the persistent repression of human rights, in particular the right to freedom of expression, in Cuba".
