Report: UFC releases longtime contender Formiga

Report: UFC releases longtime contender Formiga The UFC has released longtime flyweight contender Jussier Formiga, sources told MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz. The 35-year-old ends his run with a three-fight skid, which includes TKO losses to Alex Perez and Joseph Benavidez, along with a decision against Brandon Moreno. At one point, Formiga was ranked No. 1 in the division. The Brazilian signed with the UFC in 2012 and went 9-7 overall. He holds a 2019 win over current champion Deiveson Figueiredo.Formiga also beat the likes of Sergio Pettis, Wilson Reis, Dustin Ortiz, Zach Makovsky, and Chris Cariaso. He fell short against top contenders like Benavidez (twice), then-future champ Henry Cejudo, and John Dodson.

Joseph Rolando Benavidez (born July 31, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Flyweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship ( UFC ).

If fighting hometown favorites Brandon Moreno in Mexico City or Tim Elliott in Las Vegas is an added stress for rising flyweight star Askar Askarov , it’s not. “For me, each fight is like a sparring session because I have trouble with my hearing,” said Askarov .

A flyweight bout between Joseph Benavidez and Askar Askarov is set for UFC 259 on March 6, sources told MMA Junkie's Farah Hannoun.

Benavidez is coming off back-to-back losses against current champion Deiveson Figueiredo. The four-time UFC title challenger is considered one of the best flyweights who hasn't won the belt. The 36-year-old has earned notable wins over former champ Henry Cejudo, Jussier Formiga (twice), and Ian McCall.

Askarov is unbeaten as a professional, and he holds a 2-0-1 record in the Octagon. The 28-year-old most recently defeated Alexandre Pantoja via unanimous decision in July.

Benavidez and Askarov sit at No. 2 and No. 3 in the 125-pound division, respectively.

The main event and location for UFC 259 haven't been announced yet.
