Vanderbilt play-by-play broadcaster Joe Fisher announced Thursday he had resigned and entered a rehab facility after an awkward appearance on the Commodores' coaches show Monday night.

Fisher's speech was slurred and scattered, and he repeated versions of the same question to interim football coach Todd Fitch on ESPN 102.5 The Game. The weekly hour-long show was pulled off the air after about 40 minutes.

It was Vanderbilt's first coaches show since football coach Derek Mason was fired Sunday. In a Twitter thread Thursday morning, Fisher announced his resignation and plans.

The players remembered. On Tuesday's broadcast of "College Football Playoff Top 25," Galloway offered these thoughts about the unbeaten Wildcats: "Honestly, they've got a bunch of Rece Davises running around out there," he said, jokingly referring to the limited athletic abilities of the show's host.

Among the major broadcasters , only Fox and CNN chose to air the full speech. A CNN chyron shown during his speech read: “Without any evidence, Trump says he’s being cheated.” NPR cut off him off for a fact check. Unacceptable decision. "First, as of this morning I am checking myself into a rehab facility to address an issue I've struggled with for a long time. ... Second, I have resigned my position at Vanderbilt effective immediately."

Where the College Football Playoff stands after Week 12 There were few changes to the College Football Playoff picture as the selection committee prepares to meet this week for the first time. Beginning Monday evening, the committee's deliberations will undoubtedly run into trouble when attempting to evaluate the wide spread of games played by many of the teams in Top 25 consideration. That there are a few ways the committee could go in assessing these contenders makes this year's debut rankings perhaps the most interesting in the history of the postseason format.

How Vanderbilt reacted to Fisher's resignation

Fisher has been a fixture in Nashville sports broadcasting for decades. Beginning as a part-timer answering phones at WSMV as an Antioch High senior and then broadcasting MTSU games as a college student, he worked his way to prominent on-air roles.

Fisher was a TV sports anchor for WSMV and WKRN for nearly a decade and served as voice of the Vanderbilt Commodores for the past 23 years.

"I had hoped for a different resolution but that was not to be," Fisher tweeted. "I have wonderful memories and experiences with great coaches, players, staff, broadcasters and fans. I will cherish them always. God bless, I love you, and anchor down. Joe"

Vanderbilt athletics director Candice Lee tweeted a statement about Fisher's resignation, but the athletics department did not provide further comments.

"We appreciate your service and will never forget the great moments and memories shared with Commodore Nation," Lee tweeted to Fisher. "We now applaud your courage. Focus on what matters most & take great care of yourself on this journey. We wish you all the best."
