Canadiens 2021 preview: Young centres in spotlight for retooled Habs

Canadiens 2021 preview: Young centres in spotlight for retooled Habs Canadiens fans aren’t the only ones looking forward to the 2021 NHL season. “I always try to keep the expectations down, I guess,” Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin said after signing Brendan Gallagher to a six-year, US$39-million contract extension in October. “But we’ve got some good things as a group. I can’t wait to start. I wish it was next week. We’ll have to wait, but I think our players are also very excited, which means a lot. So we’ll see. But I think it’s going to be fun, so I can’t wait to start.” There will be a lot of new faces on the Canadiens when the 56-game 2021 NHL season finally starts on Jan.

The Oilers sure could’ve used Subban. We knew they were talking last week. The Oilers were interested in Larsson for a while. He’s similar to Klefbom in the sense he might not get a lot of One of the things Edmonton is looking for is another second-round pick, because they owe one to Boston for

Here are five things you should know about the Canadiens-Oilers game at Rogers Place Saturday (7 p.m., Sportsnet, TVA Sports, TSN-690 Radio).

The matchup: This is the first of two consecutive games between these teams that will meet again on Monday night. The Canadiens opened the season on Wednesday with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs in Toronto. Montreal never trailed in that game until Morgan Rielly scored the winning goal. The Oilers have two games under their belts after splitting a pair of home games against the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks won 5-3 Wednesday to spoil the Oilers’ home opener, but Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl led the offence Thursday to give Edmonton a 5-2 win in the rematch.

Canadiens TV schedule in 2021: 56 games on TSN2 and Sportsnet

Canadiens TV schedule in 2021: 56 games on TSN2 and Sportsnet TSN and Sportsnet announced their NHL broadcast schedules for the pandemic-shortened 2021 season on Friday, and will be splitting the Canadiens 60/40 as usual, meaning 22 of the games will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet, CBC and Citytv (plus all playoff games) and the remaining 34 regular-season games will be on TSN2 . National games are most of those taking place Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, and include all 14 Hockey Night in Canada games on Saturday, of which eight will be broadcast on CBC Television and 12 will be on Citytv.

Ignorance is bliss: Rookie defenceman Alexander Romanov said he was more excited than nervous for his NHL debut and coach Claude Julien said it was important to recognize the difference between confidence and arrogance. “He is confident, but he also wants to learn and improve. As has often been said, he seems ready and nothing bothers him.” Julien said there was an advantage in being ignorant, noting that Romanov knows the players but he’s not afraid of them yet. The next big test for Romanov will come in this game when he has to deal with McDavid’s speed.

Danault shares his tricks: The Canadiens are not a particularly good faceoff team once you get past Phillip Danault, who won 63 per cent of his faceoffs on opening night. But Danault said he’s working with the young  centres on the team to help them get better. “We work on it every day at the end of practice and I try to show them little tricks to help them get better,” said Danault. “They want to learn and I think they’re improving.”  Nick Suzuki won seven of 14 draws against Toronto, but Jake Evans was 1 for 7 and Jesperi Kotkaniemi won 1 of 9.

Canadiens Notebook: Habs put Corey Perry and Michael Frolik on waivers The Canadiens put Corey Perry and Michael Frolik on waivers Monday. GM Marc Bergevin acquired the veteran forwards as free agents during the off-season, signing them both to one-year, US$750,000 contracts. The Canadiens have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to get below the $81.5-million NHL salary cap and set their roster for the season opener Wednesday night in Toronto against the Maple Leafs (7 p.m., SN, TVA Sports, TSN 690 Radio). On Sunday, coach Claude Julien said the Canadiens will probably only be able to keep 21 players on their roster in order to get under the cap.

The puck stops here: Carey Price could have used more help from his defence in Toronto, but he certainly didn’t look like a Vézina Trophy winner. He made a stop on a breakaway by Ilya Mikheyev late in regulation time to ensure the Canadiens of a point, but Montreal isn’t going to win many games when he allows five goals on 34 shots. The Canadiens will be facing 32-year-old Mikko Koskinen. The Finn is beginning his third full season in the NHL after spending  most of his career in the Kontinental Hockey league.

The other guys: There aren’t many teams that can boast two Hart Memorial Trophy winners, but that’s what the Canadiens will be facing. Draisaitl won the most valuable player honours in the abbreviated 2019-20 season and also took the scoring title. McDavid won the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2017 and has also won two scoring titles. They led the way in Thursday’s win over the Canucks as McDavid registered the first hat-trick of the NHL season and added an assist while Draisaitl had four helpers. McDavid is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, but Danault said he’s tough to handle because he can change direction on the fly.
